It’s true that Breckenridge is a picturesque town. Snow-covered Main Street literally bumps into the Breckenridge Ski Resort to create this true-to-life winter wonderland. In the summer, the snow might melt, but the scene is just as magnificent as wildflowers spring to life, dotting the Ten Mile Range with color. No one is likely to argue against the idea that Breckenridge is a truly beautiful town. Visitors might, however, find themselves wanting to move past this picture-perfect landscape for a deeper look inside. If this sounds familiar, rest assured. There are plenty of ways to get a closer look within the postcard scene of Breck.

ATV Tours: While they might seem dangerous and hard to maneuver, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are actually quite safe and easy to handle. Many local tour companies offer day packages that give you access to trails climbing up to 12,000 feet. You’re sure to witness breathtaking views of the Continental Divide that are just not accessible by car. ATVs get you closer and higher, putting you inside those same mountains you see from Breckenridge’s Main Street. Most trips will provide not only the guided safety factor, but all the equipment you’ll need for your day including door-to-door transportation (some even provide lunch).

Jeep and Hummer Tours: Catch some air at 12,500 feet in the front seat of an open Jeep. Tours will give you the chance to navigate your way up windy and bumpy trails for spectacular views of high alpine meadows. The backdrop of some of Colorado’s famous 14,000 foot peaks promises to inspire and might even afford wildlife sightings. While it doesn’t seem like you could get much more adventurous on four wheels, Hummer tours are also popular for back-country visitors. Splashing over creeks and navigating up steep mountain ranges will be a cake walk for your Hummer guide. While your guide is sure to teach you some local history along the way, don’t forget to keep your eyes open. A panoramic view of four mountain peaks is a guarantee from the back of a Hummer tour.

Snowmobile Tours: If you visit Breckenridge during the winter, you can certainly have the backcountry experience of your life on a snowmobiling tour. Guided rides will take you through the alpine meadows and winding trails of the Arapahoe National Forest. With seven different mountain ranges within sight and more than one hundred miles of trails, you’ll be able to practice your snowmobiling techniques under the instruction of an experienced guide. Plus, most tour companies will set you up with all of your equipment, from the snowmobile itself down to your boots. Just don’t forget your camera; you’ll need it to create panoramic postcards of your own.

Dog Sledding Tours: In many ways, a dog’s four legs can be just as powerful as the wheels of a motorized vehicle. You’ll zip through high-country trails by the sheer power and force of furry friends on a dog sledding tour. Some guided tours offer an up-close look at historic ghost town and mining sites. This is one experience you won’t soon forget.

When you book your Breckenridge accommodations, be sure to ask about guided tours. Most tour companies are located right in town, making it easy for you to start your journey into Breckenridge’s back country. So, while we can certainly do a lot on our own two feet, there are some areas that are just not accessible by foot in Breckenridge. This certainly shouldn’t keep you from attaining that up-close view you’ve been desiring. Take the ride of your life…and fall deep into the beauty of Breckenridge.
