We talk about the dangers of having guns in the home. Because it is dangerous, accidents happen everyday, terrible accidents that leave us wondering what we could have done to avoid or prevent the pain. We find that children who are raised in households with guns that are used regularly are less likely to stumble upon mishap. The reason for this being their awareness of the dangers of the weapon in their home. When taught the truth about the dangers of guns, children most often are capable of avoiding the weapons and making that mistake. Those who own rifles also have less trouble keeping their families safe, because they rifles are harder to play with, they are larger and more cumbersome, and they are less likely to look like a toy a child may have. Teaching our children about guns is a very important step, but all gun owners, and especially handgun owners need to take the time to invest in a secure safe to keep their handguns in, out of the hands of children, and thieves.

Handgun safes are much smaller than gun cabinets, and regular security safes. They are made for the specific purpose of locking away your pistols and handguns and keeping them out of the wrong hands. Hand gun safes are made of steel, depending on the variety one can find handgun safes in mainly three different kinds of categories. First is burglar resistant, second is fireproof, third is the hybrid of the two aforementioned safes. When considering the purchase, consider the kind of dangers you expect most and what you want to be prepared for. If you are a collector of guns or your guns have emotional or sentimental value, then protecting from fire may be incredibly important to you. Fireproof safes are made from a thin sheet of steel, that is doubled in the walls and door, between the layers is a fire resistant insulation.

If you own hand guns because you are an officer, or you felt the need to have a gun for safety in this day and age of constant crime, then a burglar resistant safe is probably what you are looking for. These safes are made with thick steel walls, and doors. They are often bolted shut with thick rods of steel or metal. They are sturdy and air tight. Having a burglar proof safe will insure that the gun you perhaps got to defend against an intruder, will not become the armament of the intruder. Do be careful in this situation, recently specialists, and manufacturers have  began to test the safety of the cheap safes that can be bought at local discount stores. The sad truth is, these safes are actually easier to break into than we think they are, so when you make this investment, look for sure quality.

You may think that the best choice would have been to buy a safe that is both fireproof and burglar resistant. This is a great idea, and an investment in the safety of your family. But be aware that hybrid safes are more expensive than one or the other. Whatever safe you choose to buy. If it is a handgun safe, it would be best to bolt this safe into the floor in your closet or beneath your bed, or have it installed in a wall. Handgun safes are smaller, so they can be carried away by the burglar as well. Make sure to secure it in your home. Always keep it locked. There are many different kinds of locks that you can get on your safe. Key locks, electronic codes, dials, and even fingerprint safes. Keep the key away from the safe, don't give the code out. Take the little steps you may need, to make your home a safer place. So if you have a handgun, or you're going to get one. Do what's best for your family, buy a handgun safe.
