A Guide to Covert Home Surveillance Cameras
63
What is really going on in your house while you are not there? How does the babysitter treat the kids while you are out? Are your kids up to no good? What is your wife or husband doing while you are away? These are all very valid and potentially disturbing questions to ask yourself. They are just a few of the many reasons why it may be a good idea to look into a covert surveillance camera.
What is a covert surveillance camera?
In my own simple words, a covert surveillance camera is a video recording device that is capable of capturing video without being in plain sight. Many people are familiar with a standard camcorder or even the surveillance cameras seen in retail stores. A covert surveillance camera could be hidden in common objects such as a clock radio, smoke detector, teddy bear, book and even an air freshener. This allows the homeowner a lot of freedom with the locations of the cameras.

Where should I use a cover camera?
With the wide range of cameras available the sky is really the limit. If you are concerned with valuables in a living room or study then the book camera would be perfect. If you are looking to monitor the activities inside the house in your absence then the IPod player camera or the wall charger camera would do the job. The best way to determine where to use a camera is to first determine what area of the house needs to be monitored. Then, go into that room and see what is already there and see what common items would fit in without being noticed. Your final step would be to find a suitable cover camera and install it.

Install it! What am I going to need exactly?
This is the point where people start to panic. Let me tell you right now; you can do it! Once we walk through the main components of the convert camera system you will see exactly how simple it really is.

The Steps
You will need to first determine how long you want the camera to record for. There are options that range from a few hours to almost a year. If you are just looking to monitor the premises while you are out for a night then a few hours should do the trick.
Components:
Camera:
The actual device that will be capturing video. The lens will be hidden in the object you determine. This can be black and white or color.
Transmitter:
This will be hidden with the camera. This device will send the data wirelessly to the receiver so it can then be recoded.
Receiver:
This device will be located with the recording device you choose. This will get the data message from the transmitter then send it to the recorder.
Recording device:
This is a device that will record all the video captured by the camera. You can use a VCR that you already own or get a digital video recorder (DVR). The DVR will provide a much longer recording time.

Just when I thought I've seen it all! A week ago I stumbled on SpyRocks.com and saw their wireless night-vision surveillance cameras hidden inside fake rocks and artificial tree stumps for outdoor home security. They actually look realistic!!! (Their website has a cool section with photos of spy gadgets and hidden cameras throughout history too). What next??? LOL!
