A Mature Age Student
54Back To School
As a young person I was forced to stop my formal high school education a few weeks after I turned 14. No this is not going to be a hard luck story, its just that I am proud of being able to be here writing and sharing my thoughts with you all. I would also like to say thank you to those who do read and comment. It would mean a lot to me to read any comments.
Now back to my story. I did feel sorry for myself for not having been able to complete my high schooling. So after many years I said to myself - if I wasn’t happy, then DO something about it.
OK... off I went 24 years after finishing I decided to go back and get my year 12 pass. I registered as a mature in a senior college and packed my bag and took a deep breath and started on my way.
I chose four subjects to start and one of them had to be “English” or in other words writing and reading. Reading I could do but writing was a challenge. Even my teacher who did not try to help instill confidence in me told me I” did not have a good grasp of the English language”. Well this took the wind out of my sails a bit but being a very stubborn person I was not going to let a little thing like that stop me.
Each day I would turn up and sometime in her class would be unable to write even one line. But struggle on I did and slowly I started to be able to get some ideas on paper. Lucky I have a gift for the Gab, or I can express myself verbally very well as this got me through the class with a pass.
I did much better in the other classes as they delt with facts and I did not have to dig down into my imagination to write what was needed. Still part of me remembered the unkind words of that lady and it was not until very recently that I have gained in confidence and really start to want to write more and more.
Sometimes at the start of my diatribe I get a little stuck and then I get into the flow. I am very proud of being able to start to write down my thoughts and little stories at the age of 56. For many years I believed what I had been told and I was not a small child I was a grown woman but her words had such an effect that I have been stymied for this long.
I know I will just keep getting better and better with each small piece I write because the DOING is the SEEING and then there is the BELIEF and with the positive action there is growth and for this I am very grateful.
So if there is something you really would like to learn simple give it a go as you will never know the magic of the moment and the satisfaction of the challenge and then the triumph if you don’t give it a go.
Once again a heart felt Thank You for reading. I am so grateful for your visit.
Blessings

Very inspiring, DreamOn.
Just goes to show, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks! hehe (I mean that as a compliment, not in a derogatory sense of course - I'm sure you know that though).
Thanks for sharing your story with us all.
Hi again Kylie, yep I am learning every day that the world is full to over flowing with so much knowledge. I love the learning I am doing at present with my online business.
