A Mother's Love: Magnificent Movie Moms
75NO 'Mommy Dearest' here
A movie fest with Mothers in mind -- but, right off the bat...there'll be no discussion of Mommy Dearest here. For those of you that have seen it, enough already. For those of you that haven't, well, I'm just not into that one for inclusion here.
But I'll try to cover new movies, old ones, musical ones, tearjerker ones, period ones and funny ones. Not an authoritative sort of list by any means...but a good sampling, I hope you'll like my picks.
Moms on film, a lot to love

First, A Bounty of Bette
Now, when Bette Midler's movie persona comes to mind...lots of movie buffs zero in on The Rose, her famous breakthrough role, or Beaches, where if you're stretching it, motherhood is a crucial element of this classic chick flick. But, Bette's done her fair share of being a mom on film. For the Boys, Stella, Down and Out in Beverly Hills and even First Wive's Club all show the Divine Miss M as a good ol' mom. From where I'm sitting, start with For the Boys. Of those mentioned here it's got to be Bette at her mom-best, a dramatic role where we also get to watch her sing. As a WWII widow raising a son and working as a singer/comedienne, Bette's character is a completely dedicated mother who ... oops almost gave away the story to any of you out there who haven't seen this one. But whether you're interested in mother-movies or not, take this one for the musical performances where Midler grabs the screen and doesn't let go! (Rockin': "Stuff Like That There," Tender: "P.S. I Love You" and the Beatles' "In My Life")
Imitation of Life...the angst of teen years when your mom's a star! (1959) The best hanky scenes focus on Lana's maid
A Stepford Bette, not really discussed here
Streep got Oscar nomination, but MacLaine great here as over-bearing mom

Postcards from the Edge

Magnificent Mommy MacLaine
Terms of Endearment (1983)where Shirley MacLaine plays one of the most irritating mother roles in the entire genre of mommy-movies. So irritating, yet so dedicated, really have the entire box of tissues with you alongside the popcorn...she won an Oscar for this one. Then again in 1990, when MacLaine paired up with Meryl Streep in Postcards From the Edge as one of those infuriating mothers that's guaranteed to give a grown daughter a migraine or two. But just like our real mother's...we adore her all the same. In her role as mom in 1977's The Turning Point, MacLaine plays a ballet dancing mom who struggles with long time competitor Anne Bancroft over MacLaine's daughter. Then, there's Mrs. Winterbourne, where MacLaine is loving but no-nonsense to Ricky Lake. Of the four, Postcards my favorite for MacLaine as Mom. It's a lot of mothering for an actess so adored as the adorable hooker in her earlier career.

Ones you might overlook
I'm betting this one would have been overlooked by many of you: Woody Allen's Interiors (1978) is just about the slowest, most depressing, yet sorta brilliantly photographed and conceived...whatta the girls do when momma's really depressed! Geraldine Page received an Oscar nomination for best actress, but what a dreary dreary way to spend an afternoon. Included here because I've always remembered it...it's just that memorable in its artsiness. A warning here...be sure you're current with your anti-depression meds before you sit down with this one! ( LOL )
Julie Kavner (the voice of Marge Simpson) in Nora Ephron's This is My Life. Kavner plays a Brooklyn-ish single mom with two daughters who strives to keep her focus on her dream of becoming a stand-up comedienne while her older daughter just wants a "normal" mom. With Carrie Fisher and Dan Akroyd.
Cher's mother role in Mermaids (1990) is pretty much in the same genre. Offbeat mom, sarcastic struggling teen. When it comes to playing mom, Cher can't possibly top her performance in Mask. Cher might have won her Oscar for Moonstruck, but she was great in this complex role. Winona Ryder plays the unhappyp teen daughter here.

Even more movie moms
For funny, a favorite movie-mom-role was Goldie Hawn's in Overboard.
For a double mom hit, you can't do better than Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts in StepMom. For the best in grieving mom scene, it's Sally Fields in Steel Magnolias.
Stepmom airs Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, at 4:30PM on ABCFamily.
And we shouldn't forget Fields again for her role in Forest Gump.
Helen Hunt as the totally stressed out mom in As Good As It Gets, and even Jennifer Lopez's sweet maid-mom in Maid in Manhattan or her commando mom role in Enough. Diane Keaton, pictured above as a daughter, was the perfect foil as mom to Steve Martin's Father of the Bride and a funny, sweet, befuddled toddler-toting workaholic mom in Baby Boom.
Keaton continues as mom in Something's Gotta Give, Because I Said So and in The Family Stone.
Something's Gotta Give airs Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at 9PM and 11:30PM on TNT.
Mary Steenburgen and Dianne Wiest both were great mom roles in Steve Martin's Parenthood.
For a Fifties take on motherhood, there's Joan Allen in Pleasantville. And for outrageous mom performances, can anyone top Laine Kazan? She was the mother in My Favorite Year, Beaches, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding ! And fantastic in each role!
Seems that although the press talks a lot about the film industry's focus on movies for the 13-year-old demographic, there's still lots of great mom roles being created. Speaking as one myself, Yeah!
(Information here, especially dates, that I didn't remember myself came from Wikipedia)

Just wanted to note where the basic facts came from. Glad you liked the collection. The first Stepford was good, very close to the book, but the new one's totally funky extreme cute bizarre.
This is very well put together and moust have had a lot of thought going in to it. Interesting all the articules do come in to play.
Thanks for compliment. I, too, thought it was interesting how the movies and the actresses have common threads between their roles that we often don't consider. From Godfather to Something's Gotta Give...look how many times Diane Keaton has portrayed a mother!
I love love love Diane Keaton! Your hub resonates with me, especially as Mothers' Day approaches! My mom lives 7 seas away. Idk there is something about turning the big 30 that got me. You hub gave me a great idea...be on the look out. It will be something of a response to your yours! I love Diane Keaton in Mad Money, the villaness is quite the role, again where she played mom! I would love to meet her and just talk to her. She recently adopted a sweet asian girl. Is true that the one man she has always loved is Jack Nicholson?
Great hub!
Great hub. While you may not have to give Wikipedia as a source, I'm glad you did.
to Patkagmak, like you, I'm new here to hubpages...fun to be writing! I'm sure you agree! Glad you enjoyed the Diane Keaton mentions; haven't had a chance to see Mad Money, but guessing that that trio of Latifah, Keaton and Holmes make for great fun!
to Uninvited Writer. Want to keep things up front and honest. Don't like all the obvious "cut and paste" hubs I see here. I've got a lot of data and TONS of opinions in this head of mine...but remembering dates of these movies, I'll leave that to others and happily give them credit!
Love your Shirley MacLaine -- Rumor Has It could also be added to that list!
Oh, yeah! I saw Rumor Has It...Hope I'm as cool a grandma when I'm lucky enough to have grandchildren! Thanks for comment!
OK, you CAN"T forget Carolyn Ingals of Little House on the Prairie!!!! And what about Mrs. John Walton and Oilvia Walton -- both super moms :)
I so agree!!! Olivia Walton my favorite of the two, but Little House on the Prairie my daughter's fav!!! She's majoring in American History due much to that show! Pioneer women and all, not just the War of Independence and such. BUT, to be fair, these are super TV moms, not movie moms! If I included all great Moms in the performing arts I'd have some eight volume set like the Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire or some such! Funkiest TV mom? Cloris Leachman of Mary Tyler Moore Show...Loudest TV mom? Roseanne Barr...Most believable Tv mom? From That 70s Show. AND SO ON!!! HUM, maybe there's a hub here for me!
Great, great, great hub!! So many of my favorite movies listed here!:)
Thanks Kim for all the 'greats' I enjoyed reminding readers about all the great 'mom' roles out there, and 'mom' movies. Thanks for stopping by!
MOM is the best! No one can replace mom!
Great Hub! keep writing!
Yep....Moms the best....where would each of us be without one?
This is a great hub! Some of my favorites are Beaches, The Rose and Mask. There were some here that I have not seen, but they are on my list now.
Thanks, Carol
Glad you liked! Enjoy watching the ones you learned about here...they're all great!
Great hub! you've listed all my favs!
Oh! So glad this colum was one you enjoyed!
Oh! So glad this colum was one you enjoyed!
Goldie Hawn was a great mom in Overboard. She really showed that being a mother was about more than biology. She connected with those kids even though they were bad as H- well you get what I'm saying. They weren't really bad. They just needed a mother. I know that but still the movie was funny, I loved it, and there is a lesson to learn there.
Tootles!!!
Thanks for stopping by...I agree about the lesson of "Overboard." More than biology to being a good mom. And told in such a cute funny story. I must watch that movie at least once a year!
And...haven't heard/seen "tootles" in ages!!! Are you a closet Gidget fan?
Gidget was a little before my time, but I caught reruns. Hey, have you ever seen the old Tammy movies? I haven't found anyone who even knows what I am talking about. Their about a girl who grew up on a riverboat.
Tootles!!
Yep, I've seen the Tammy movies...if I remember right...3 different actresses have played Tammy...Debbie Reynolds, Sandra Dee, and the third I can't get her name to come to mind at the moment...they were always corny, but sweet. Those were the days!
I loved those movies and it seems that I am the only one around here that knows anything about them. I have seen them so many times. When I was seventeen, I stayed at the hospital with my aunt. The night she died, I was alone in the room with her spending the night, and I watched theses movies and an old Frankie Avalon movie. She died right in the middle of How to Stuff a Wild Bikini. I have had a love for theses old movies ever since. Thanks for remembering them.
Btw, I guess I like corny movies because I relate to them. I'm a little corny myself from time to time.
Tootles!!
Maybe you could put together "my favorite corny/sweet movies" hub! BEST!

Great collection. Wikipedia (and imdb.com) make for great research places on subjects like these, and you don't really have to credit them - it's publicly-available information.
Wow, I'm a Nicole Kidman fan (as long as you don't mention Bewitched to me) and I'm so glad you reminded me of The Stepford Wives. I'd wanted to see it, but as time went by it just dropped off my radar. It's back on my list; the original was pretty good if I remember correctly. =)
