A Motivational Speaker Not To Forget
63I went to a great "Kickoff Meeting" for my job today. There was one speaker that was there that was awesome. His name is Mark Scharenbroich, a Grammy winner (for speaking) and long time motivational speaker. Here are the main points that I was able to take away from his speech that I want to remember. They can be used in everyday life, not just business.
The first point is Nice Bike. This is his best point, and even the name of his website: www.NiceBike.com. You can learn more on his site, but here is the overview: The one thing that anyone who owns a motorcycle wants to hear is "Nice bike!" That connection that is made is the feeling and power of complimenting people. The three points to remember about that are Recognize the person or attribute, Honor that aspect about the person, and Connect with them using that.
Here is another example: Mark told us about his father who served overseas in the Navy. One time, the two of them went on a trip where they met some Vietnam veterans. His father walked up to them, asked if they were "over there" and then said "Thank you." The vets were so happy and grateful. They said he was the first person to ever say thank you to them. The father recognized them, honored their contribution, and connected with them through his experience.
The second point I want to share is the fact that Mark called mistakes Mulligans, like in golf. A mulligan is a do over. The point is a mistake is really an opportunity to learn and do something over.
The third point is some advice he once received from a toll taker. Mark asked how long it takes to get from where he was to Tacoma. The toll taker told him it was "91 miles, but it depends on you how long it takes." The lesson is there are many paths you can take and many decisions to make along the way. You can speed through life and miss important things, or you can take the windy road and find things others have not. You can also go slowly and take in each moment, or speed through it and maybe catch something.
The last point I want to make has been said thousands of times in countless meetings, but is worth repeating. A strong foundation is the only thing that will allow the building to say up and stable. Make sure you have a strong foundation in buildings and in everything you do. Always take time to inspect the foundation and keep it strong. Learning never stops.
