Sophia Grojsman is one of only a dozen master perfumers in the United States who are responsible for creating some of the best-known perfumes (Calvin Klein, Estee Lauder). Known in trade as a “nose,“ she earns over $100,000 a year because there is no scientific/computer substitute for her nose and brain’s ability to identify, remember, and mix fragrances that elicit pleasant memories and moods. One reason a computerized nose has not yet replaced a human nose is that scientists are only now beginning to understand which combinations of molecular qualities (weight, shape) and olfactory receptors determine which of 10,000 different odors humans can smell.
