A Perfect Strategy for Preventing Memory Loss and Alzheimer's
68Memory Loss and Alzheimer's
Are you afraid of losing your memory as you grow older? Then worry no more because you only need to do one thing to prevent that from happening. What is this perfect strategy?
learning a new skill
Learn Something New Every Day!
Yes, learn something new every day. It can be a new song, a new skill, a new craft, a new language phrase, a new word, a new game, a new anything, as long as it is something new.
Do you know what happens when we are learning something new? Our brain gets excited if it is learning something new and the more excited it is, the better is the blood flow, and the better is its function.
However, our learning should not end there if we want to make sure that we will remember what we learned. The next step is to then consolidate our new knowledge. And how do we do that?
Consolidate New Knowledge
To consolidate the new knowledge, we have to repeat and use what we learned and form a mental image of it. For example, if we learned a new word like “dolente” which is a music directive that means “to perform slowly and with sorrow”, then we have to repeat the word aloud so we also hear it. Then, we use it in singing a song or imagine we are watching a musical wherein the star is singing a passage “dolente”. If we do this, we will never forget this new word ever again and every time we watch an opera or a musical we can identify that the star is doing a “dolente” when he/she sings slow and with sorrow.
Exercising Our Brain
If we learn something new every day, we are exercising our brain. Our brain needs as much exercise as our body, maybe even more. So solving a new puzzle or memorizing a new poem or learning a new way of throwing a bowling ball are activities that excite our excite our brain. An excited brain is a healthy brain - that means no Alzheimer’s!

Hi Coffeesnob,
Thank you for visiting and thanks too for your encouraging comment. Yes, I also learn a lot from reading hubpages.
If I want to learn a new thing and make it stick, I either do it over and over, or write (not type) it out. Something about the process of writing (not typing) makes it stick better. I can't stand not to learn new things, and have very little tolerance for people who aren't curious too!
However, I'm not sure keeping one's brain active can prevent Alzheimer's if there's a genetic predisposition. A favorite aunt who was mentally and physically active all of her life died of it. Very sad...
Hi JamaGenee,
I'm sorry to hear about your aunt.
Your are right, if there is a genetic predisposition, then Alzheimer's cannot be prevented. However, keeping the brain active might delay it.
My mom has Alzhiemer's. The problem was that she lived alone too long and all her friends got sick and passed away. I didn't realize how long she was going without contact. I'm sure that was the main cause of the onset. She lives with us now and we keep her going.
Another good preventative measure is to create. I'm mainly a fiction writer and creating a story from scratch will definitely keep your mind sharp.
Hello Pete,
Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your mom.
You are right, your mind is always busy if you are creative. Thank you for that addition.
Alzheimer's is truly a dreadful disease. To forget people you love is something that scares me greatly. Let me look into your method, and report back to you. Thanks for your article.

True, we have to keep our brains active. They need exercise just like our other parts of the body. Also playing brain games like Sudoku, Scrabble etc will help also.
Hi angcorics,
Don't we all dread having this disease? That's why we have to do something before it strikes us. So learn something new every day!
That's right cgull8m, playing mind games like Sudoko, Scrabble, puzzles, etc. always bring something new. So they are perfect for brain exercise.
