Get a handheld GPS and get started!

I've been a Geocacher since 2003 when I discovered the sport by accident while reading an article in an outdoors magazine. As soon as I understood the game of Geocaching, I was ready to go, and so I went out immediately to by a handheld GPS receiver, which at the time cost 200 dollars.

What is Geocaching?

It's a sport in which players hide containers outdoors on public lands which are filled with tradeable items and a logbook. They record the coordinates of their hide on their own GPS receivers. The coordinates are posted online and other players download the coordinates to their GPS receivers and travel out to find the treasure. Currently, there are about 650 thousand geocaches hidden around the globe.

Where do I start?

The best place to get started is www.geocaching.com . There you may start and play forever for free, or become a premium member for three dollars a month. The money supports the website. The site has all the search methods you'd need to find what caches are in your area and their coordinates.

Travel Bugs and Geocoins

An awesome attraction of caching are the travel bugs. These are not insects, but metal tags attached to objects that you choose. Each tag has a tracking number. The object the tag is attached to travels from cache to cache with geocachers and its location is recorded at each new cache. At geocaching.com, these records are listed so that a player can see how far his or her bug has gone. Many players give specific goals to their bugs and track them to see how long it takes to reach them. Geocoins are beautiful coins designed or purchased by players and are used in the same manner as the travel bug tags. The coins are always shown off at Event Caches, which are meetings of cachers in a given region.

Let me know...

This was a real "quick" guide to caching, in answer to a request. Please let me know if I might add something else to help you out! Don't hesitate!
