Terminology plays a key role people in any profession, the more aware you are of terminologies the much easier the job becomes for you. E-mail marketing is an online concept, which is largely used by individuals and companies to take their marketing messages to potential target segments.

Over the years, online marketing companies have evolved their own way of communicating in technical language so the people who hire such companies should also know these terms. In this article, we will be discussing the different terms and their definitions beyond the abbreviations used every day in email marketing.

  • Click through is when a reader clicks on a link in an email. Email marketers send an mail to their potential customers. The content of these emails have embedded links, which, when clicked through, can lead the reader to a landing page.

  • Demographic is a term that describes a group of people sorted by profile, lifestyle, age group, income and other consumer related aspect. Demographics are widely used to find a target audience for email marketers.

  • Geo targeting is a term that describes going after recipients that live in a certain geographic region, town or neighborhood. Email marketing strategies are developed on scientific research-based data about geographical aspects of the potential target segment, so this terminology is well known to people involved directly or indirectly with the email marketing business.

  • Multi part email is an email sent in different versions-usually HTML and text. It is entirely dependent on the specifications and preferences of the receiver and the capability of the receiver's email provider to receive certain types of email.

  • Opt-in code is a code posted on a Web page of some companies allowing subscriber to sign up for emails from the company. These kinds of codes serve as protocols in maintaining the security of the site and also serve as filters against the unauthorized and unnecessary email messages.

  • Blacklist is a term applied to emails that are marked as spam by email service companies. This term is largely used in email marketing communication and most email service providers will block emails from blacklisted email ids.

There are many other important terms to learn, but the terms above serve as a good intro to email marketing lingo. Like all other online applications, it's best to know the insider terms even if you're not heavily involved in the creation of email marketing newsletters.
