A Reading List to Understand the Future

An essential reading list to understand the world in the 21st century
1. Abolition of Man (1943) by: C.S. Lewis In this short book Lewis describes how teaching young children that words are relative, evolves into a much more worrisome view of the world that eventually leads a person to see everything as relative. Without an understanding of Natural Moral Law can society exist? Or will be find ever more destructive paths of livelihood that both destroy our human nature and the world we live? Abolition of Man is a brillant book because it is easy to read, yet absolutely profound in its description of the world.
2. Brave New World (1932) by: Aldous Huxley – Huxley focuses on how technology, absolute power, and brainwashing can enter into society and the human disposition. This book is a warning against the destructive possibilities when man becomes enslaved to technology and the political state. His conclusions about where we are heading are just as daunting as Lewis’s, if only more elaborate in its overall description. In order to better understand the world we live in today everyone should read this book.
3. 1984 (1949) By: George Orwell – In a similar way to Huxley, Orwell seeks to show where the world is heading. His conclusions focus less on the biological changes in the human being and more on the political brainwashing and control that accompany an all power state government. However, his warning should be taken no less lightly, because our freedoms are being taken away just as quickly as he might have envisioned. The scary part is that we may not be fully aware of this change and maybe even believe it will be a good thing for our country or our society. If that is the case, then his point will have been proved true.
4. No Exit (1944) By: Jean-Paul Sartre – What does life look like when it becomes meaningless? Sartre wrote during the mid-20th century, becoming the father of existentialism. This short play shows how human relationships become pointless when people realize that there is no reason to live nor a reason to die. Hell becomes other people. Although I am sure most people are repulsed by this notion, he taps into deep insights about the human condition. Worth reading if only to reject his philosophy.
