The name is pronounced Skipper-Kee.It is a Flemish word meaning Little Captain.Schipperkes originated in Belgium before the Fourteenth century.The first Schipperke was imported into the U.S.in 1889.They were registered by the A.K.C.in 1904.A Schipperke is right for many people.It is the ideal size and excels in beauty.They do not resemble any other breed.Weighing in at 10 to 18 pounds,with small triangular ears and no tail.A Schipperke is a excellent and faithful watchdog,vigilant and alert.It is big dog in a small package,small in size but large in bravery.They are a tireless incurable,inquisitive busy body.

Schipperkes are one of ten breeds selected by Canine Companions For Independence to help handicapped people.It has a high degree of intelligence seldom encountered in many breeds. It attracts attention and is a conversation starter.It is eager and quick to learn.It excels in obedience trials .A Schipperke has a thick,glossy jet black coat.A Schipperke is a excellent house dog.It is always happy,fun-loving,affectionate and devoted.
