Okay, I admit to having "been there, done that" when it comes to Valentie's Day. I've had a husband and a couple of long term relationships and Valentine's Day does come around every year. In order to choose a gift for Valentine's Day men have to understand why the day itself is important.

Let's face it. Men and women are wired differently. That is a given. Women are more enchanted by romance and make believe and men are more practical and realistic. Some men believe that they can stop romancing their woman once they're made a commitment to her. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Valentine's Day is important to women because so many men (not all of them) stop the romance when things get comfortable. Women need the romance to feel connected and sexual. If you are a guy who never brings home flowers or writes a love note and forgets anniversary gifts then you'd better go all out for Valentine's Day.

Make Valentine's Day an important event. If you have kids... get rid of them. Hire a babysitter for a few hours or ask grandma to come over so you can take your wife to a hotel. Buy bubble bath, chocolates, champagne, flowers and candles. Suprise your wife with the bubble bath, flowers in vases, petals on the floor and sides of the bathtub, Get in the bubble bath with her and whisper sweet nothings in her ears. Eat chocolate, drink champagne, relax and have fun. If you're very daring you can purchase a shaving kit for the hair "down there" and shave each other bare. Once you're finished it's time to turn out the lights and adjourn to the bedroom and from here you can use your imagination.

The idea is to make Valentine's Day so spectacular, so unforgettable that it keeps you out of hot water for an entire year. If you forget to pick up the drycleaning and your wife is upset ask her if she remembers the name fo the chocolates you bought for your Valentine's Day adventure. You want to make sure you get the right ones next year. Her eyes will tear up, she'll get all dreamy and you automatically get a pass to pick up the drycleaning the next day.

Don't abuse or overuse this system men. It works only if you are sincere and you make a real effort to be kind and sweet to your wife every day of the year. You can ramp up your romantic life, and you know what I mean, if you don't make Valentine's Day a once a year event. That may require some basic rewiring of your brain so we'll leave that for another time.
