* MARKETING PRINCIPLE #1
"Thou Shalt Monitor The Response To ALL Your Advertising and Marketing Efforts"
Most business owners have NO IDEA whether their ads, letters and promotions are working or NOT! They will consistently spend $50, $100, $500, even $1,000 each and every week for a particular ad or promotion that they don't have a clue as to how well it's doing for them just because they feel they should be doing so!
"Well if you're guilty of this, STOP IT IMMEDIATELY!"
As a business owner you should NEVER, EVER run any promotion unless you are monitoring the results of your hard earned money .. Let's look at it this way -- would you place an order for supplies and pay for it without having any idea whether you got the goods or not!?
I'll bet not! Belive this, placing advertising of sending a sales letter is really NO DIFFERENT. You should know exactly what you get for your money.
Anyone that tells you, "Just keep your name out there and you'll start getting results somewhere down the line" is just wasting your money!
Yet that's exactly what I see most of the ads do. At best they get deferred results. At worst, and that's in 95% of the cases, they serve no purpose whatsoever..
You MUST monitor everything that you do. This is the backbone of your marketing success.
We have already touched on several ways of coding your ads and sales letters, and we will be dealing with different monitoring techniques in future issues of NETfabulous!
* MARKETING PRINCIPLE #2
"Thou Shalt Find and Develop Your Very Own Unique Selling Proposition (USP)"
Tell me, "Why should I buy from you? What can you offer me that the fellow down the street cannot?" Surprisingly, nine out of ten people in business have no clear and compelling answer to this question!
Most people back into a "me too, I am here and that is why you should give me your money" attitude. This does not appeal to the savvy consumer. If you want your business to grow then you must first determine what YOU can offer that others cannot!
For instance, a small furniture store in the East Coast offers their customers a 'try and see' policy leting them try out a lounge or a dining suite in their home for a week ..before they buy it. No obligations. Does it work? You bet it does. In fact, nine out of ten items that go out on that basis get sold. That's their "Unique Selling Proposition (USP)."
What's yours?!
It can be anything: lower prices, longer warranties, the fact that you can get it to them quicker, or you have a wider selection.. Your USP should be plastered to everything that leaves your desktop! Have it printed on the outside of your envelopes, your business cards, use it as part of your letterhead, headlines, and include it in every sales letter that goes out!
Never hesitate to tell everyone what makes YOU so special and why they should shop with you!
* MARKETING PRINCIPLE #3
"Thou Shalt Test Different Strategies, Advertisements and Prices!"
How are you deciding what products to sell, what strategies to use, and at what price to offer these? Isn't it amazing how businesses just seem to "know" what works and what doesn't?! Well, facts are that NOONE can know what the marketplace will support unless they first TEST it with different offers!
It is good marketing strategy to test your offers in the marketplace and with your existing customer base by testing a number of different strategies on a small scale.
You WILL make 'buckets-full' of money by testing first! To maximize your returns you have an obligation to conservatively test and LET YOUR MARKET TELL YOU WHAT IT WANTS!
If you have salespople in the field or are running ads and sending letters, you owe it to yourself to try different approaches, sales pitches, offers and headlines.
Why?
Because a different approach used by one of your salespeople may get 30-50% better results than the others. Wouldn't it make sense to have every one of your people use this same approach? And then have one of your people test yet other ways to increase this new level of results? Of course it would.
Test the Price!
Let's say you now get 10 calls a week, and out 10 you close 4 sales at $400.00 a piece. What would occur if for one week you tried to sell the same item at $350.00 a piece. How many would you sell and would you clear more profit?
The following week you could test $500.00 per item and monitor what that sales price does to your sales and profits.
Doesn't this make sense?
You see, a small change in price could literally double your profits! But rather than deciding what YOU think the item is worth, LET THE MARKET TELL YOU!
