A Canvas Of A Different Kind
Ben does his work on canvas but it is not what you would consider a typical work of art. The only stretching done here is when he unfolds his imagination on to the shoes. They are really something to see and from the comments made on his sales they are the pride and joy of his customers.
This young man attending Purdue University is currently up to some interesting, wearable, artwork. I have not seen anything that equals his endeavour so I thought it would be great to share the find. What first got my attention was the shoes. I was thinking of a pair for my niece. The other thing that intrigued me is that he is a local boy. That meaning he went to a local high school and is now attending the university in Lafayette Indiana.
Ben Panfil is quite an amazing guy, offering artwork you can wear, FOR SALE, on his myspace site. He wrote an introduction on that site so I will not spend your time with those details. What I would like to do is have you take a look at these shoes he is decorating. He works from the ideas that you give him so, I guess you can let him know what you like and he will make the shoes to your specifications. His website says his orders are all custom made.
His work appears to cater to college and high school kids but he is probably able to produce anything requested. Looks like he is designing shoes with sports, music, maybe some sci-fi and whatever else you might conjure up, for your own custom pair of tennis shoes. I liked what I saw and thought you too might enjoy this site. I was thinking of a pair of shoes that had to do with Mick Jagger.
That is my niece's all time favorite musical talent. She has been a fan since she was old enough to tune in her Mother's stereo. Seems like a pair of shoes would be a great Christmas gift for a college girl. Really! Most young women love shoes, right? Got me to thinking.... Why not try a canvas of a different kind? These tennies would make a unique gift for just about anyone who likes funky shoes.

Paul,
I think he is charging by the pair maybe $75. or something like that. Have to look him up and specify what your brother would want. I think they are all done per order. Share the website with your brother, glad you checked in. C.S.
Pretty neat! It would be a shame to wear them and get them all messed up. You never know where you will find art.
great hub regards Zsuzsy
Paul,
His myspace says he is probably charging $50. including shipping. Tha sounds pretty reasonable.
Zsuzsy,
Yeah, it is great to see the artwork in such odd places. I hate to get my new white shoes dirty, guess you would have to be extra careful with these. But that's okay!
Thanks, C.S.
I had seen these type of shoes on Zazzle, where you can upload your own image and buy a pair. I was not going to pay 60 dollars for canvas shoes because I am a little cheap, but the work your friend does seems even more special because it is by hand.
Reminds me of the gauntlets I gave my dad for his birthday. My mother promptly hung them up on the wall, lol. Art is appreciated differently by everybody and I hate to think that people order these shoes to toss them out later :O they are beautiful! thank you for sharing C.S. Alexis.
I love these shoes- what a talented young man! What's even cooler is that the artwork is functional. I love art that serves 2 purposes- both beautiful and useful. I used to have some shoes that I bought from a local artist in Santa Cruz that I ADORED. I wore those shoes until they had holes in the toes, and even then, I didn't want to throw them away because I loved the artwork on them.
Which reminds me, I should pull out my acrylic paints, get some shoes and have some fun doing this myself!!!
Great hub and thanks for the inspiration!
Dorsi,
The cool thing is, Ben does the shoes free hand. He does not make a plan on paper, he just goes after it.

That's pretty cool. How much are they? One of my brothers is into limited edition shoes, but they still do runs of at least a few hundred and they can go for well over $200.
