A Tribute To My Dad

Look At What You've Done

Dad, take a look at me now

I hope that you can see

The footprints that you made in life

Have walked right into me

I write with all my heart

Lyrics that repel the pain

From you I learned to write a song

And sing it oft' and again

What you sewed within me

Goes beyond the holidays

I try to give and help someone

And give our God the praise

I like to plant gardens of hope

That from God's word ensue

Abundance within each beating heart

His great and awesome truth

I'm like you, dad, green eyes that cry

I cry for our human plight

For wars we fight and soldiers lost

Yearning just to make things right

Yes, I'm like you and they are like me

My daughter and her own - you see

We care, we love and offer hope

We are your living legacy.

Your Earthly Walk

Writing for you today, Dad

In hopes that you can see

The footprints that you made in life

Have left a legacy.

You wrote with all your heart

And sang through your times of pain

You taught me how to write a song

And sing it oft' and again

I watched you every year

Just 'round the holidays

Giving hope to someone else

Not ever seeking praise

The gardens that you planted

Produced an overflow

And grew into abundance

A green and awesome show

Your deep green saddened eyes

Oft' cried for someones plight

For wars you fought & soldiers lost

A yearning just to make things right

You have given me so much

There's good you've sewn in me

You are me and I am you

A living legacy

                                               YOU ARE A LIVING LEGACY

My Dad passed away in 1996. I find that sometimes in this crazy life it is too easy to focus on those things our parents didn't do rather than looking at all the good they did. My dad was not perfect, nor am I, nor is any other human being that attempts to raise children. We just do the best we can with the knowledge we have. As I reflected today about Father's Day, I decided to write a tribute to my dad, who in very many ways, I emulate.

Not to be left unsaid, I pay tribute to my heavenly Father, who created me, who chose my parents for me and who loves me with an everlasting love, the kind of love that sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die in my place. It is my prayer that with each passing day I will emulate Him more and more and when I am gone I will leave a living legacy of a life changed and a life that was lived in His abundance.

I so enjoyed reading your poetry.  Only one of my three children called me today.  I am not hurt.  I know they're busy and I'll be seeing them all in a few days anyway.  But I am surprised. Your poems lifted my spirits in that, after I am gone, maybe they will think of me with this kind of tenderness. Thanks.

James,

It is all too easy to drift away from the here and now with those we love.  As the poem stated my dad was not a perfect man, but he was my dad and loved me.  God has shown me that many of the things I enjoy about my life today, and many of the talents and gifts that I have came from him.  He was a quiet man, yet when he wrote his songs and the played his guitar and sang them his heart poured forth and his message was loud and clear.  Thanks for your repsonse.  It truly lifts me up when another has heard my heart loud and clear.  Praying your time with you kids will be memorable for all, and that they will tell you now how much you mean to them. I am sure they already think of you in an incredibly special way.

Great Hub...my dad too..is my hero! A couple of years ago, an otherwise healthy father, he was almost taken, by a serious bout of Pancreatits! It shook, this daddys girl...to the core! My mom and I have a great relationship...but it is different, for a daddy and his daughter! Keep on writing, great hub! Blessings! :)
