Have you ever fantasized about having your own private island vacation? One without high rises, motels, fast-food restaurants, and crowds? You can make your dream a reality by booking a trip to Little St. Simons Island, just off the Georgia coast.

Little St. Simons, the northernmost among the Golden Isles, is located just north of St. Simons Island. It’s only a few miles from Brunswick, and it’s 70 miles south of Savannah. The island is 10,000 acres of truly pristine wilderness, made up of marshes, maritime forests, moss-draped oaks, and seven miles of beaches.

The best thing about this island is that it’s privately owned by the same family that purchased it in 1908, and they only allow a total of 32 overnight guests at the time. Do the math – 10,000 acres divided by 32. You’ll have plenty of your own space and won’t have to “rub elbows” with anyone unless you want to! The only way to get to Little St. Simons is by boat, so you won’t have to worry about “outsiders” invading your tranquility, either.

While you’re on this golden nugget, you can spend your time searching the shore for shells, exploring, sunning, or swimming in the gentle Atlantic surf. A team of naturalists will take you on eco adventures for up-close encounters with nature. You can also take a small motor boat, canoe, or kayak into the tidal creeks to view wildlife, dolphins, and birds. And speaking of birds, this is a mecca for bird watchers. Located on the Atlantic Migratory Flyway, more than 280 species have been observed on Little St. Simons, including Bald Eagles, Painted Buntings, and Roseate Spoonbills. Wildlife on the island include European fallow deer, armadillos, sea turtles, and alligators.

Fishing in the ocean and tidal creeks is a wonderful way to spend a few hours. Typical catches include flounder, sea trout, redfish, whiting, sharks, and croaker. The island’s chefs will even prepare and cook your catch for you! Don’t worry about dragging all your gear on your trip – the resort’s tackle shack has everything you’ll need.

You can also take an island safari with a knowledgeable guide, hike the winding nature trails, or bike along sandy lanes. You won’t find paved roads and cars on the island. Also, sometimes there’s a late-night “owl prowl” scheduled, where you can view the nocturnal predators in action. With a staff of eight naturalists on site, you’re sure to gain a wealth of knowledge about the flora and fauna of the barrier island.

Accommodations include cottages, a river lodge, guest houses, and a beautiful rustic hunting lodge built in 1917. All the rooms are air conditioned, attractively decorated, and enjoy access to a fireplace for those chilly winter nights.

As a guest, you’ll be served three scrumptious meals a day, including traditional low-country fare like boiled shrimp, steamed crab, and oysters. Other favorites are Georgia quail, grilled grouper, and Southern spoonbread. Many of the vegetables and herbs served are grown right on the island. Some of the meals are served outdoors, with great views of the ocean. Every night, cocktails and appetizers are served before dinner, giving you a chance to mingle with the other guests. The meals and drinks are all inclusive.

The island offers a truly “green” vacation. Because of aggressive conservation efforts, the island has been awarded the Benchmarked Certificate by Green Globe 21. Only two organization in the United States have achieved this lofty award.

A vacation to Little St. Simons Island is a unique, unforgettable experience. It’s the perfect retreat for businesses, church groups, or family reunions. A getaway to the isle is all about nature, peace, and tranquility – a place of ultimate serenity where you can feed your soul.
