A few observations after three months on Hubpages

By Mr. Happy

I have a few things to say about the way people are using this website. I shall be as brief as I can for these are just some observations, not much else. To begin with I want to say something about the point marking system which allows readers to mark up or down a person’s answer to a given question. Secondly I would like to bring attention to the way arguments/discussions take place and at last I want to say something about “research” and/or looking at issues from different perspectives.

I suppose I have nothing against marking people answers with an up or down vote. It is a vague way of knowing how people view that answer although not very accurate because you are basically given the choice of saying “yes’ or ‘no” in the way you “vote”. Life is not always ‘black”” and “white’. What I really wanted to talk about though regarding this “voting” system, are the people who vote someone’s answer down without posting their own idea. This has happened several times to me now: I post the only answer to a question and I get votes down yet, nobody else posts an answer. Thus, in a logical deduction people read my answer, they disagree voting me down and then cowardly run off. If this is a place of posting questions, answers, debating issues … what is the bloody point in voting someone’s opinion down and not putting up your own view point? Either you cannot write and/or you just voted someone down for no reason. Otherwise it is the common understanding that if one disagrees with someone else, he/she has a reason for that disagreement and hence this is a site where beside other things people debate issues, one would tell his/her reasons for disagreeing.

On a good note I must say I have had many fruitful discussions/arguments with many people on this site. I have laughed many times and can truly say that for the most part I enjoy the interaction. I think reasonable and logical arguments are encouraging and usefull. I am saddened though when I see people losing their reason and calm when sensitive issues are brought up such as abortion or socialism, Israel’s bullying of the Palestinians and so on. There is no point in flaming-up with anger.

This is where I come to my last point about doing your “research”. Especially when dealing with complex issues be they global warming, health care or gun control: know your facts. Have information to support your arguments. There is no point debating an argument from hear-say, it will not be much of an argument. Research also does not mean listening to CNN or NBC; research is not what politicians think or the pastor said at the last sermon. Research means you look at scholarly work. Literature or research done by professionals regarding the subject you are researching (people who have studied that specific subject their entire life more or less). Keeping in mind that 'every page has two sides' the best way of doing research is in looking at several resources debating your topic at hand, perhaps contradictory opinions can be found to gain a better understanding of the whole issue.

I have not been much on here lately manly due to those concerns I have stated above. These are just some observations after the three months I have been on. Perhaps they are premature but since I am not the “keep quiet” kind, I had to “say’ something. I appreciate any comments.

Many people put forward hasty, ill thought through, under researched arguements. I am not talking about Hub Pages, but life in general. Also, many people are not really able to put forward a coherent answer to a question, or articulate an alternate point of view. Therefore, they just say they don't like what you are saying.

Somedays this feels bad, other days I can shrug my shoulders and say 'that's life'.

However, there are some brilliant writers on Hub Pages who will make you laugh and make you think.

I hope that you will persist!

Hi Mr. Happy -- long time no see. Glad you're back. Speaking only for myself, I can honestly say if the hub is on an issue, I've researched it to the best of my ability. That's not to say I'm right about everything -- but at least I can back up my argument with fact. I think most of the writers I read do the same. A hub written for fun (and I do enjoy writing them) may very well be based on some snippet from CNN that set off a train of thought, or a conversation I've had. And I assume my readers know the difference.

Yes, there are loads of people here who run around without the knowledge to back up their views, particularly on political issues. There are many who adopt a personae, a point of view, and play up to it, not matter what. And we all know who they are.

As with anything, Mr. Happy, take the good with the bad. I for one enjoy your writing and presence on these pages, so don't let 'em chase you off. Concentrate on the good you find here and engage with them. Forget the rest.

Mr. Happy.

Please keep being HAPPY. Your writing is intelligently brilliant, its style and 'diplomatic' logic is superlative... I think you just have to ignore the 'down'-voters and 'live-on'... It's hard to 'please the crowd' -- specially if some hub-members are less educated and don't have a 'fine ear" for 'LETTERS' Musi/Art/...

Please stay HAPPY: we need Getle-men and intelligent writers like you...

I think what you are looking for is on the forums. There you can get into a dialog.

The Q&A IS for "hit and run". You cannot dialog there, as you can post only one "answer" to a "question".

I don't think that anyone "voting" an answer up or down has an obligation to say why. I vote lots of answers up or down, depending on whether I think a point made was good, or whether I think the answerer is an idiot (e.g., religious wackos). Sometimes, as I have time, I will submit answers or questions, but I don't think I have an obligation to do so.

I think one reason for the Q&A is that if someone really gets a bug up their ass about a question and/or associated answers, they will be motivated to do a Hub.

Whether they are well researched is something else again.

Best regards,

dabeaner, a fan

I take the points you raise and agree with them, up to a point. I think the purpose of HubPages is not so much scholarly debate, which I also value and enjoy, but the joy and fun of writing. Most Hubs I write I do put in quite a lot of research, reading papers and books that mean something to me. I too get very irritated with some of the hot air that is blown about, but at the same time I'm inspired by some of the really great writers here.

I love the comments I get on my Hubs, some of them are quite negative and that's the prerogative of the commenter. I also find that many people comment without really understanding the issues in teh Hub and that can be quite annoying. But that's life.

What I do find strange, but again it's their right, is people who write here without any perceivable purpose or point. But I guess if they want to waste their time like that that's their right, I just won't go back to their Hubs.

Meanwhile I like your writing and your comments so would like you to carry on making a worthwhile contribution here.

Love and peace

Tony

Mr. Happy...I have not had this experience, but I guess I have not paid attention to whether people were voting my answers "up or down." Hubpages is the right place for your to express your creativity and also for you to express yourself over something you do not like. My closest friend who happens to live in Toronto and is on HP was very upset at a comment someone made on one of her hubs so she wrote another hub to "make her point" and let others know that she did not appreciate it. I have not read many of your hubs, but will look into them soon. Best, GPAGE

great hub...and some very good points raised. Hubpages is just like a 'mini' version of the real world: you have so many different kinds of mind sets and opinions, except unlike real life, here u are thrown together in the same room and everyone has the right to talk at the same time! My take on it: never to take too seriously anything that goes here and to walk away from unnecessary arguments instead of trying to get too involved in them. anyway, stay 'happy'....and keep writing....!

You sound like a nice man and I would hate to know that we lost a good man. There will always be those who take our sensibilities lightly and attempt to discourage our efforts. I like your hubs and thank you for your comment. I appreciate it like you will never know. :-}

I've enjoyed your hubs as you know! ARTAMIA said it best above - this hub should clearly get your point out to those who have inspired you to write it. Stay happy, keep em coming!
