How to improve your quality score and CTR for Google adwords campaigns
72The importance of relevance in adwords
It's no secret that google rewards the advertisers who follow the "rule of relevance" in their google adwords ad campaigns. They find their ads climbing up the ad slots without having to shell out as much as the advertiser occupying the top ad slot and the click through rate (CTR) for their ads constantly increase , but what exactly is this rule of relevance that gets you in the good books of google ?
Using relevancy to form an adgroup
Let's say you are promoting a product that helps to quit smoking. After researching for the keywords with less competition and more traffic you come up with these keywords : how to quit smoking, ways to quit smoking, quit smoking tips, quit smoking hypnosis , quit smoking programs. The list can be very long , but to avoid being tagged as a spammer I am restricting the number of keywords here.Notice that all these keywords have a common keyphrase -quit smoking. So that's the phrase we should be using in our ad title and the body of our ad.
This will tell google that our ad title and ad is relevant to the product we are promoting and this will help increase our quality score thereby decreasing the initial bid we place for these keywords. The other obvious help we will get from google for applying the rule of relevancy is that whenever someone searches on google with this search term , your ad will be showed in bold and be more likely to be clicked on.As the CTR increases , your ads position will also improve.
Form new adgroups if your keywords don't match
Let's say you want to include another keyword "dangers of smoking" in your campaign because it's also relevant to your product.Although related to your product , this keyword doesn't exactly have the common keyword that the other keywords share. Hence, adding this to the same adgroup which has a different common keyword may affect your quality score and hence the initial bid may get affected negatively. So it might be a better idea to form a new adgroup with a different common keyword thus allowing your campaign to reap the rewards of relevancy.
Rule of relevancy on your landing page
Another effective way to improve your quality score by sticking to relevancy is to construct a landing page that complements your product. If you are advertising a product to stop smoking , but your landing page doesn't mention it in the title or the first quarter of your page , then this may put you at disadvantage. When creating campaigns in adwords account, Google analyses not just your keywords , ad title and ad , but even your landing page and the interconnectivity of these. By constructing a landing page that has a title matching your ad and product , you can give your quality score a further boost.
Analysing adwords
Why does google reward relevancy ?
Google dominates the search engine market and perhaps will continue to do so for many years to come , but this can only happen if the searchers get what they want from google. If you do a search for "affiliate marketing tutorials" and find an ad of Tropicana juice on the side bar then chances are that you won't waste any time over it unless it intrigues you.(That's not to say lateral thinking never works with adwords).
But from analysing the results , Google knows better and hence, wants the adwords advertiser to stick to the keywords and ad titles that truly match their products so that the searcher gets an honest and effective search result and keeps coming back to Google over and over.Playing by it's rules of relevancy you wouldn't just get better results from your campaigns , you can help them stay at the top of their industry and buy out more heavyweight companies and make their services free for all.;-)

Thanks Tei!I'm sure someday when you get time from your pharmacology lessons you'd turn to adwords , maybe just to help out budding pharmacologists with their lessons :)

Wonderfuly useful content, BlueWings! I've never really understand things behind google and AdWords and similar stuff. Far too many very punctual technicalities for an average Joe. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Thanks,Solar!:) Yep, there is a learning curve with adwords and it's definitely better to let the basics sink in before starting an aggressive marketing campaign. In fact, Google has everything on adwords available on their site for free but sometimes , people find it an information overload and give up before they take the plunge.I am sure they will simplify the lessons at some point to optimize the results adwords can bring , hopefully, sometime after knol moves out of the beta phase.
This is something I need to really learn. I guess I have to read and reread this hub until I grasp this adwords things. Thanks bluewings for this info. :)

Well, seems I am constantly learning both on Hubpages and about Adwords. Good hub. Keywords are, I think, the backbone of G-adwords. Whats nice is knowing what your "competition" is using as keywords.

You are welcome,Enelle! =)
Completely agree that relevance both works in the favour of Google and the advertiser, and that relevancy should be considered at all stages of the user journey. Also agree with your comment that keywords that don't match should be split out into separate ad groups and given their own tailored ads.
Well-researched keywords, tightly themed ad groups, tailored ads and highly relevant landing pages will always be a winning formula. And despite many advertisers saying, "I'm doing this already", we're actually a long way off this high-relevant approach.

There are loads of other tips and techniques that can help achieve great results in AdWords, but what it ultimately comes down to this: if you give the customer exactly what they are looking for, with highly relevant ads and landing pages that cater for their needs, they will reward you with their wallet. Relevancy has been around for years, and as you point out, will continue to stay around for years to come.
Great info - do you offer tutorials? ;) I am just getting started with all this, and could really use some pointers...and thanks for a great hub!
Hi Alan. Thanks for your valuable input!
Hi Redelf :)I'm glad that you found the information helpful.I don't really offer tutorials, but there are some quality e-books available on google adwords.
