A penny for a thought

I found a penny in the palm of my hand mixed in with several silver coins. I got it in change after spending my last dollar on something superficial and petty. I walked out of the store and passed a fountain. One full of peoples wishes and dreams. I walked a few feet past it with a sceptical smirk and saw several small children running toward me with handfulls of coins, their wishes and dreams. For a brief moment I was taken back to my childhood. I remembered all of the little things I had wanted, things that I thought mattered. I remember wishing on falling stars, tossing coins in the well and being very careful not to step on cracks in the sidewalk. I kind of chuckled aloud remembering the wish I had made on the way home from the state fair when I was 8. I had wished for a Minnie Mouse costume to be in my closet when I got home. It's a nice thing to do when you are small... to look forward to fantasy. It gives us a foundation of hope, something to stive for in our lives.

I turned and sat on the bench nearby to watch. I realized that I had turned out to be nothing like I would have wanted myself to be. If I could go back to change the things that went wrong in my life I would. Just to show the world that I am a good person, that material things mean little to me. I know I can live without a lot of the things it seems in frequent moments I can't live without. I looked down at my hands... the penny still new and shiny. I rubbed my thumb over the words "In God We Trust". I stood up and walked to the fountain and tossed it in. I tossed it alone no wishes attached. I know if I am going to have anything in this world. I am going to have to work hard for it. God hears my prayers. He knows my heart. Inevitably, it is His will that will be done. I take my good morals, my strength and my faith and move head up back into the world.
