Here is a sweet bread recipe from “The Cupboard Drawer”, I do not know the story behind the Bishops title but it is  heavenly with a nice cuppa Tea whether it be a green or black tea. I was routinely accused of being a ‘heathen’ for drinking my teas with out milk or sugar, by my late wife Zena (an Englishwoman of the highest order). But when I took the time to make the Bishop’s Bread, my sins were smoothed over a bit. So Do Enjoy…

2 Cup All Purpose Flour

2 tsp Baking Powder

1 tsp Salt

1 Cup Nuts, Chopped (I prefer Walnuts)

1 Cup Dates, Chopped (for an aphrodisiac effect get the darkest dates you can find)

1 Cup Maraschino Cherries (Sliced)

1 Cup Chocolate Chips, (again for darker dates use darker chips)

4 Large Eggs, beaten

1 Cup Granulated Sugar

Preheat Oven to 325 Degrees

  1. Prepare a buttered and floured 9 X 5 X 3 inch Loaf Pan; set aside.
  2. In a large Mixing Bowl mix the Flour, Baking Powder, and Salt., Then add Nuts, Dates, Cherries, and Chocolate Chips; mix lightly
  3. In a small bowl, beat Eggs and Sugar Together; Stir into the flour mix
  4. Turn mixture in to the prepared loaf pan; and bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour and 15 mins
  5. Let Cool, Wrap well in tin foil for storage

Yield 1 loaf

Note: This bread travels well through he mail, so if you have a huny deployed in Afghanistan or Iraq, use the lightest dates, and maybe butterscotch chips, and send them some, you can find the disposable aluminum foil loaf pans with a lid at your nearest grocer. Then make the dark one when they come home, and have some fun…as always DO Enjoy!!!

It does sound good - and easy to make! And as an Englishman - tea without milk -it's like Laurel without Hardy!!!

SimeyC- Thanks for Stopping By! Ah there's the rub since I'm a Yank that came over and stole away in the night with the best woman your country has ever produced! Though my in laws count me more as a 'mate' and not a 'bloke'. I must admit the barriers of a common language are at times significant, I do count Norwich as the only place outside the US I feel really at home. I get the Heathen treatment there as well...though I will not relent. (or should it be repent?)

Years ago, i used to go to a Christmas madrigal dinner that the college would put on and they always served bishop's bread with the fruit and cheese course. have always wanted a recipe but the college had no way to break their's down. thanks for sharing. I guess I'ld be considered a "heathen" too if ever got over to the UK, i drink my tea plain or with a little honey added. thanks for sharing.
