A very long night.
48Heart bypass surgery; finding out
Having a chest pain so bad, that it wakes you up is one thing. Try it while you are hundreds of miles from home, in a sleeper berth of an 18 wheel truck, parked at a truck stop. Your first thought is hopefully you can make it inside before collapsing in the parking lot. The Flying J outside of Jackson, GA was my salvation as they immediately called 911 and got me a place to sit and a drink of water while waiting with me for the ambulance. After the paramedics assessed me and determined that I needed to be checked out, they transported me to the Spalding Regional Hospital in Griffin, GA. While I was in the ER, a nurse named Dana did a fantastic job reducing my pain while keeping my heart rate up. Kind of like juggling a bowling ball and a feather. They admitted me into intensive care and got the ball rolling trying to determine if I was actually having a heart attack or just a bad case of heartburn. It's hard to describe how weird the whole thing was, not 24 hours earlier; I was planning on a quick trip to Fla, and racing my car at the Muncie Drag way on Saturday. Now I'm facing possible open heart surgery or even not getting out of here alive. Guess I better call my sister, who now lives in the Pacific Northwest.
