ABOUT FACE Interview (Feb. 13th, 2009) ~ One-On-One With Slim K ~
Occupation: Artist, I'm a Singer, Songwriter, Actor, Photographer, Designer and once a Dancer
Current Residence: I currently reside in Valencia, CA, about 30 minutes north of Los Angeles.
In regards to your occupation, what projects are you currently working on?: I just finished not long ago work on two film projects and I'm working on my music, there will be new releases incl. new music videos which filming starts in March.
What kind of music?: Well, I've been working on a new album for sometime, a mixture of R&B, Pop, Electronic/ Dance, which is going well, but right now I'm trying to get "(Move & Dance) Burn The Disco" series out of the way, it's a special edition series of 4 discs (and final chapter) featuring new mixes and videos. I'm quite excited about it. Besides, the original single from last year, will be available soon on Amazon UK., I'm currently working on getting into more European stores.
What's your favorite part about being an Artist?: Live out my passion, make my dreams reality, to do whatever I feel and want. besides I love to travel and meet new people.
What are your hobbies and interests?: Books, History, Archaeology, Fashion, Videogames, Egyptology, Politics, Art, Cooking, Wine, Music, Film, Photography, Design
You are into art like photography and painting, who are your favorite artists?: Helmut Newton, Steven Meisel, Patrick Nagel, Robert McGinnis,
Terence Donovan, Bruno Dayan, Andrew Blake and Guy Bourdin.
What book have you recently read?: I just finished "Wild Boy - My Life w. Duran Duran" by Andy Taylor (which I enjoyed very much).
Currently I'm reading "Conversations with Brando" by Lawrence Grobel, "Somebody: the reckless life and remarkable career of Marlon Brando" by Stefan Kanfer (yeah I have a Brando phase right now) and "What happened : inside the Bush White House and Washington's culture of deception" by Scott McClellan.
What's your political affiliation?: Independent
What are your thoughts about the political situation in the US.?: How much time do we have?, Well the economy is in the toilet (worldwide) but I'm glad to see Barack Obama in office fighting, I respect and like John McCain, but unfortunately he's 8 years too late, I'd rather see him instead of George Bush, to me Bush is one of the most incurious, incompetent and narrow-minded presidents the US. had ever seen, however I do wish him well and happiness far far away, it's definitely time for a change, change of a generation, such is Obama, i wish they (Washington) would just give him a break!, it's not easy to dig through Bush's 8 year s**t mountain, Obama is now a little over 3 weeks in the white house and people are already nagging, give me a break .. I don't recall Bush doing better?
What's an average day like for you?: My days are different each day, on an average one I wake up daily at 7 am, I work out (depending on how I feel) I prefer jogging and stretching (if I'm outdoors), breakfast and watch/read the news afterwards. I get into work at my office around 9ish or 9:30, I check and return emails, call and callbacks, review and submit to (film/ music) projects. I get a snack around 2 or 3pm (since I don't do lunch). Brainstorm and do the heavy creative lifting in the afternoon hours (music, design, photo, film, video) whichever is on the table. Around 5pm I'll have another cup of coffee while "Countdown w. Keith Olberman" or "The O'Reilly Factor" is on, I'll check and return emails (once again). At 8 or 8:30pm I usualy wrap up my day and get ready for the evening, dinner and wine, "which is my favorite part of the day". After dinner I relax either with movies, video games or reality tv crap. I usually crash around 2 or 3am. if I'm still energized/awake, I go down with a book. The weekends are pretty much similar, only that I start my day around noon. In the evenings I'm usually invited to different events (parties, shows, art galleries etc .. )
What's your favorite wine?: I enjoy all types of wine, i keep an openmind, love going to wine tastings too, my all time favorites are Cabernet Sauvignon and Chianti Classico
What's your favorite signature cocktail?: I enjoy the classic James Bond dry martini with an olive (i make them at home from time to time) and anything with Baileys is cool .. love the flavor
Who were your favorite superheroes growing up?: Superman (Chris. Reeve), Batman, Flash .. basicly the DC Comics with it's Justice League, they are still my favorites and I still read the comics and watch the cartoons today. I'm excited to hear that director Martin Campbell (”Casino Royale”) is in talks to direct "Green Lantern".
How many iPods do you have?: We got 4 (two iPod Classic, one iPod Video, one iPhone)
What's the most challenging about your job?: Usually there is no one to blame but myself. On the other hand there's no one really looking after you in this biz. it's dog eat dog. The pressure to succeed is entirely mine, I've been following the scene (both in music and film) for at least 30 years and I've been involved in it for the past 20.
What's your favorite comfort food?: Mediterranean hors d'œuvre plate with different kinds of antipasti, different kinds of cheese, green/ red grapes, red wine and fresh french baguette. give me that everyday .. I'm happy *wink*
What has been your biggest fashion faux-pas?: I love t-shirts .. all kinds of kids stuff and amazingly I can find my size with Star Wars, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, Superman, Batman, Kajagoogoo .. ha ha ha ... I don't think it's a faux pas, I combine it with jeans, blazer, a nice scarf/ shawl, sneakers .. I'm good
What item or accessory do you never leave home without?: Depending where I'm going and how long I'm staying wherever that may be, I always have my standards with me, an iPod, palmpilot, book, game boy, notebook, pens
What was the first record/cd you ever bought?: "Just an Illusion" by Imagination, summer 1982. great song, still today
What's your favorite season?: I enjoy all of the seasons, I love the high heat in the summers and the cold in the winters, but I'm blessed with the californian weather
If you were stuck on a desert island, what three material objects would you need to have with you (provided that you would have food, water and shelter)?: My family, my computer, my camera
What's the last videogame you played?: Guitar Hero 3 .. rock on
What was the last movie you saw?: I just watched the five "Dirty Harry" movies .. "Do You feel Lucky? Go Ahead Make My Day"
What bands are most prevalent in your iTunes playlists?: Anything 80's such as Duran Duran, Kajagoogoo, The Police, Queen, Roxy Music, Depeche Mode, A-ha, George Michael, Level 42, Michael Jackson, Kraftwerk, Robert Palmer, Simple Minds, Talk Talk, Human League, Spandau Ballet, Visage, i got a huge collection from 80 to 89, that's a lot of ground to cover, it was music that has substance, emotion and inspiration to me to this day, don't get me wrong I listen as well to contemporary music such as Coldplay, Maroon 5, My Chemical Romance, Panic at the Disco, Keane, Fall Out Boy, Lady Ga Ga, The Bravery, The Killers, The Fray, One Republic, 30 Seconds To Mars etc.. and all kinds of R&B, unfortunately there's not much exciting outhere nowadays it aint what it used to be .. Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Robin Thicke, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, N.E.R.D, Snoop etc ..but the list is pretty slim , I got a huge collection as well of Jazz, Standards, Swing, Classical Music, Electronics, Dance, Club etc etc
If you had to define yourself as an accessory or an article of clothing, what would you be?: As an accessory I'd go with a BlackBerry (push e-mail, mobile telephone, text messaging, internet faxing, web browsing ) that's me multitasking and flexible with my mind restless wandering everywhere.
As an article of clothing I'd go with either Brioni or Tom Ford suite.
What song would you listen to before a night out on the town?: "This is New York" by Sander Kleinenberg .. gets me so pumped up
Have a great weekend
