ACL Surgery, do you feel I should get it or not?

I injuried my Lt ACL last football season and am debating....

I've never had surgery before and work in the hospital so I know what to expect. Although I know what the process is, it doesn't help me in determining what decision I should take.

Since my injury last football season, I have been getting my knee stronger and can now run and do some stuff. As of right now I can not participate in varsity sports, but I can still play sports nonetheless. My mile and a half is around a time of 10 minutes and 20 seconds, which isn't bad. I used to be at a 8 minute flat just 2 years ago. Running straight distances isn't to bad, until I start twisting and turning. With that, I also have some discomfort every now and then still and know it isn't normal. I feel it might feel better more and more, but i'm nervous what if I'm wrong, or what if I'm right. It has improved drastically since I've injuried it.

... If i get surgery I'll have screws placed in my left knew; the surgeons will have to scalpal through my skin and cut a piece of another ligament to attach it to my Anterior cruciate and so them both accordingly. Rehabilitation is about 8 months or so with bunch of physical therapy, which I'm not looking forward to.

I also work in a department of 3 people, so I am a vital role in maintaining manning.

So knowing that little scenario do you think I should take my chances and continue to run the way it is; or do you think I should do the routine thing and take the operation?

I would really like to know what others would do in this situation.

The Days before....

I'm two weeks out of my ACL reconstruction. I'm 27 yeas old and an avid volleyball player. The doctor told me I wouldn't ever have full knee stability without the surgery, so I got it done. It's a pretty easy procedure with very litle pain (if you keep the meds going). It's a long recovery, but it was either 9 months of recovery or a lifetime of no volleyball. I opted for the recovery. Two weeks out and I'm walking fine with a brace. Another two weeks or so and I'll be out of the brace. I researched ACL reconstructions and there's about 95% rate of full returned function. I'm happy with my decision. Good luck!

Thanks, Did you have a complete tear, or partial tear? I spoke to a orthopedic surgeon last week and she told me if your menisci isn't torn or flipped and it's not a complete tear i might be okay in the future, but like you said, that's a chance you weren't willing to take, I don't blame you, well good luck in your volleyball, and thanks again for your insight, it does help.

I'm due to go under the knife in September - I have ACL damage as a result of a dislocated knee from playing rugby, I've got my pre-op in a couple of weeks and I have to say I'm rather nervous about that and the surgery itself, but it's either surgery or having to walk on an unstable knee for the rest of my life :/

Wishing you all the best with your operation, hope you'll be back on your feet and kicking it on the field again soon :)
