AHDD, ODD, What next?

Are ADHD, ODD etc the new trendy names thought up by the medical profession?

The answer is no - despite what you may be reading in the media. We are not currently in the midst of an epidemic of ADHD, Autism, Oppositional defiant disorder or any other of these types of conditions. Better education and better facilities and knowledge accounts for some of the increased numbers of children diagnosed.

But is that the real story? Dr Green, in his book understanding ADHD, says something along the lines of a child severely affected by ADHD with a saint for a mother and a fantastic teacher is less likely to be diagnosed than a child who has a milder ADHD but whose mother hasn't won a sainthood. I am quoting out of context but hope you get the idea i.e. that the diagnosis of ADHD and similar conditions is based on opinions and the interpretation of facts.

f you are in the same situation I am i.e facing the probable diagnosis of ADHD please come and visit our blog at http://www.ourexceptionalkids.com/blog. You might find some helpful information or you might be able to help another parent in a similar situation.

Please do drop by. Now please excuse me - I am off to earn some points for that Sainthood!

'til next time

Best wishes

Rach
