HELP THE ENVIRONMENT - OPTION TO NOT HAVING ADVERTISING MAIL/JUNK MAIL

In Australia residents have the option to place a "No Junk Mail" or "No Unsolicited Mail" notice on their mail boxes. This notice ensures that only self addressed personal mail is received in our mail boxes if that's what we choose. I read news online so I cut down on newspapers. The Posties totally respect the signs and it makes a huge difference to the lack of paper clutter in my home. Recycle bins are emptied every fortnight but I have so little of it now that I could put it out every two months.

The No Junk Mail option became available because many people hated the amount of advertising mail being received. Are you able to approach your mail deliverers and request the same option?

I do wonder what other countries have this option and avail themselves of it.

Spam is cyber junk mail and we have no problem deleting it and figuring ways of blocking it.  Unsolicited physical paper mail is no different. Only problem is trees are cut down to supply it to your letter box.

Be kind to your environment and it will return the favor by being here longer.

Here in the UK, we have this option to opt out from junk! I have yet to subscribe to it!!

I use different names for everything including, takeaways food services, cabs, reward card schemes etc, and I can actually tell where all my junk mail comes and will notify the companies in question who take my details off there system!!

I have a "no junk mail" sign on my door which has cut down on litter in my hallway!!

Here in Portugal, we also have this stickers to put on our mail box which say "No publicity, thanks!". The mail company give them to anyone who ask and this has been like this for several years. At least, we don´t get any mail that it isn´t addressed to us but I keep receiving addressed mail which is nothing but publicity

We need this option bad. I wonder if we have it and I never asked. I get so mad at how much crap we get. Another thing that pisses me off just as bad is how much junk they stuff inside my bills. I get a credit card bill and it has at least two or three pages of advertisements in it too. Advertising is rampant and insane now.

Thanks for your input Shadesbreath. I am a loss as to why people don't demand it. But some people love their advertising mail, it's all they get. But having said that, people could request it from the advertiser (the business) and have it sent free. It annoys the heck out of me and I actually feel it is rude to assume I want it. It's the same with telemarketing - I don't want it so don't give it to me. People forget they have choices and can make many changes if they just did something about it. Demand it, you pay taxes.

Well, we have the "no call list" now here and it works great. We need a no snail mail spam list now too.

Hi Jewels, Compu-smart is spot on. Yes, here in the UK you can opt out of receiving junk mail, and one enterprising postie tried to publicise this fact on his round, only to nearly lose his job over it! Junk mail is big business. Only a tiny proportion is ever actually looked at, but clearly that tiny proportion is sufficient to justify the destruction of the rainforests etc. There should be a campaign to encourage more radio and TV advertising, and less paper hits.

Tks Amanda. A campaign would be good. Top down works even better. Politicians need to get involved.

I wish we had something like that in US. We get way too much junk mail which mostly we put it back in thrash. Thumbs up for writing an environment friendly hub. We need to do all we can to give the best to our next generation.

Thanks CW. Things are changing in the US, maybe this could be included in the changes.

We can only hope to get the option to opt-out from junkmail someday.  It is one of those environmental issues not at the top of the list but still very important.

After I pick up my mail, I go straight to the recycle container and sort it before I even take it in the house.

Hello open-minded, thanks for dropping in. Shows how much of it is superfluous, you'd wish it wasn't in your mail box to begin with.
