AMD, Advance Microprocessor Division. Known till now by a burning Heat Sink Problem.I dont know about its history and don't wanna talk about it. But the first thing i remember about it is many years back AMD's processor were hot on the air in the sense of burning heat sink. Yup i have seen many peoples complaining about the processor burn and quality of the processor.

It was may be because AMD was coping the architecture of the Intel in the generation of Intel Pentiums. But after that AMD decided to step aside and go for the new architecture. It was K7 or K8 architecture which AMD introduced in the market which given AMD a breath, because it was original masterpiece. I will not go into the details of the architecture, because i also don't know much about it. But i know for sure it put Intel back because it was perfect at that time. Intel went from Pentium 1, Pentium 2, Celeron and them Pentium 4. And Pentium 4 was the worst cheap produced by Intel. And it was totally put out of the way by AMD's Athelon and Samprone architecture.

 AMD was on boom that time everyone was saying AMD only. AMD was perfect on Price ratio also. But there duel core were costly. I rem when i bought Athelon 64 3500+ it cost me around 4-5k and one of my friend went for Athelon 64 X2 5000+ and it cost him near about 25k. And at that time AMD have cut the prices by 20%. You can think how processor were costlier that time.

          Where was Intel in these two years? No body knows, there Pentium 4's were eating too much power and getting quickly out of the market. Intel needed a change and they come with a totally new architecture Code named Conero. The buzz was in the market before the launch only. And when Conero(Now known as Core 2 Duo) thrown out the AMD from the market. Yup Conero was far better in every aspect(Though Conero architecture was present in the Mobile sector by the name Core Duo). Now it was turn of Intel to put AMD in crisis.Here we need to note one thing. Intel is a Wheal and AMD is a small shark in the market. So Intel introduced price cuts which puts AMD a way back in financial conditions also.

          What AMD did for Conero. They introduced a new architecture named Phenom. But a total flop, couldn't save them. Then the split happened, AMD loosed its Foundry company. So who were buying AMD? who wanted some good power with low value. So AMD could beat Intel somewhere in price/performance raitio.Another thing AMD did is to buy ATI, a graphics card company. And ATI have introduced a very fine tech cards beating Intel and Nvidia a lot. So AMD was still alive.

We see here Phenom was having major problem of 65nm Technology and 2 MB max L3 Cache. While Intel enjoyed the 45nm and 8 MB L3 cache. AMD has to come with something new. They came but not with new, Only refined architecture of Phenom Called Phenom 2 with 45 nm tech and 6 MB L3 cache.and refined architecture, which is superior than Core 2 Duo and Quad 2 core. So did AMD beat Intel at last? No Intel have another masterpiece in there bucket Core i7 which beats Phenom 2 by miles. But its very costly, so right this time AMD beats Intel in price/performance ratio for many points.Another great part of AMD is ATI. With ATI they can produce IGP's which brings AMD the choice of gamers.

I hope the split have given AMD more power to compete Intel. After all if there is no competition, there is no fun.
