ARE ERECTILE DISFUNCTION AND MALE ENHANCEMENT COMMERCIALS APPROPRIATE DURING PRIME TIME VIEWING?

WATCHING TV WITH MY FAMILY

Recently my family and I (which includes my husband, my 23 year old daughter and her boyfriend and our little shih tzu ) were sitting in our family room watching an episode of Heroes. We are having a nice time and then along comes a commercial for a male enhancement pill with a couple discussing it in detail. Do we really need to see this in prime time??? After the first one there were 2 other commercials throughout the evenings viewing all related to the same subject. One was for a lubricant where they show the couple in bed after they use it. I thought to myself what if my daughter was much younger? How would I explain this to her? As a younger child under 10 I think it might have gone over her head and I could have distracted her. In her pre-teen and teenage years there is no way I could have distracted her and as I was always open to her questions on sex I would have had to explain. But why should I have to explain this very private adult matter to a child? Do children or even young teens need to know about this subject when they are just learning about sexuality in general? To really explain sex education to our children can be challenging enough. Now we need to add new topics to the mix, erectile disfunction, lubricants, male enhancements. Where does it end?

Is it time to start sending kids out of the room for commercials? We as parents are concerned about what they are viewing on television but what about the commercials? Now we have to screen those as well. For my part I really don't want to see it either. If a couple is having this problem, the commercials are just going to be uncomfortable. If you are having the problem, chances are you have discussed this privately with your doctor or discreetly looked it up on the Internet. Again do we really need to see this in prime time? I realize there are also commercials for female products but this is a normal bodily function that all woman have. I don't really like those commercials either and sometimes they are uncomfortable to watch but I don't put those in the same column with male enhancements or even worse I think are the ads for lubricants. How do you explain that to a teenager??

Maybe its just me getting old but I would rather watch an ad for fast food or a new movie preview tham watch a couple talking about what lubricant they are choosing. If we don't complain now, it will get worse and more things will become advertised that we don't need to see while enjoying our favorite shows. Now I am a fan of Family Guy which I know is off-color but I choose to watch that show, I don't have a choice on the commercials that are shown during any of my shows. I guess its time to DVR all my shows and watch them commercial free. It is the only solution I can come up with right now.

I too agree, it is just WRONG!!! The things they get away with on tv is appalling!!!! When I am sitting with my three grown sons, I feel the same way as you...and no it is not you getting older. The seem to push the envelope now on nearly everything!!!! They fling so many curse words, and we are just supposed to accept it! I am just waiting for the day when they actually use the "F" word on tv.... at that time, I think we will stop watching all together!!! Great hub!!!!

I too agree about the inappropriate tiime slots for such commercials, especially if they are shown during the family hours.

yes, a true male does not need enhancement so they should not advertise. where i come from you're liable to kick PUNCHED IN THE FACE for mentioning male enhancement

I agree with you 100%. A male enhancement ad (smilin' Bob, I hate that one) came on while I was watching TV with my granddaughter and her friend. Both were 11 at the time. They giggled. I asked them if they knew what it was. Vitamins! They chimed. Whew. I was so relieved. So now when one of those commercials or the ones for lubricant comes on I just tell them they're vitamins.

I completely agree with you. I find these inappropriate. Guess I'm kind of naive - I thought the "smiling Bob" commercials were for erectile dysfunction problems, till my hubby clued me in.

All these types of things... ED, male enhancement, lubricants, condoms... I really don't think they have a place on primetime TV.
