An All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) definitely remains one of the most powerful vehicles on the market. Whether you use it for work or for play, ATVs are rugged enough for virtually any type of terrain. They can practically withstand even the worst road conditions. Some of the terrains that they can smoothly traverse include long grass, dirt, mud, or snow. The essence of the ATV’s ruggedness lies with atv wheels and tires. Therefore, you need to know how to differentiate the wheels from the tires. One thing you should keep in mind is that the wheels on an ATV differ from its tires. Specifically, the wheels are the round (or composite) metal rims used on ATVs. Along with the axle, it is the wheels that move an ATV forward. Meanwhile, ATV tires cover the wheels and safeguard them from various types of terrains. Ideally, the diameters of atv tires and wheels must be equal.

When you need to buy ATV tires or wheels, ensure that they qualify as “power wheels” or “power tires.” Here are tips to find the best ATV tire and wheel sets:

  • Choose the right material - When selecting wheels for your ATV, it is advisable to choose rust-resistant wheels. This feature will prevent them from easily rusting. It is very common for ATV wheels to become wet, so rust-resistant wheels will help to preclude them from becoming less effective.
  • Consider the ply rating of a tire - The higher the ply rating that a tire has, the sturdier it is. You should consider the conditions in which you ride your ATV. For instance, if you ride your ATV in rough or rocky terrain, then you should buy and use tires with a higher ply rating.
  • Do your homework before using larger tires - In many cases it is possible to replace the current tires on your ATV, with slightly larger tires. However, it is important that you verify with the ATV’s manufacturer that it is permissible. This could help to prevent possible safety problems that could result from adding tires that are too large.

Useful Tips In Maintaining ATVs

Like any other types, ATV wheels must be given proper care and maintenance. The upkeep of these types of tires does not really require you to be a professional in order to properly maintain them. All you need to do is be familiar with these few simple tips that will help you keep your ATV tires running at their optimum function:

  • Take steps to increase the mileage of your ATV tires - These steps are effective for both new and used ATV wheels. For instance, you can regularly check your ATV tire’s air pressure. Also, you can avoid abrupt stops and fast starts.
  • Keep your wheels and tires at the ideal air pressure - Check the air pressure of the tires that cover your ATV wheel set. If you are using Douglas ATV wheels, you should review the air pressure that the manufacturer of this type of wheels recommends. As a word of caution, it is important to realize that the upper limit air pressure located on the tire’s sidewall isn’t always the pressure that you should use for the wheels per se.
  • Understand what causes the tires to lose air - Whether your ATV tire covers vision atv wheels or ITP ATV wheels, it is important to know the causes of the tire’s air loss. So, you can easily pinpoint where the leak is occurring. For instance, punctures and cracks can occur to the tire’s sidewall, or to the tire’s tread. Secondly, you could check the tire’s valve stem or valve core. A loose valve core or damaged valve stem can cause air to leak from the tire covering the wheels.

Riding an ATV can definitely be one of the most thrilling activities you can engage into. By following these tips, you can select and maintain ATV wheels and tires properly—thus maximizing the amount of riding they can provide. More riding will result in more memorable experiences when rolling on any terrain!
