A view over Mpumalanga at Kaapschehoop

If ever you want to cleanse your soul and rest your mind completely, a stay in the mountains is just what you need! Where better to go than Mpumalanga wih it's mountains and small towns?

Driving down the N4 from Johannesburg/Pretoria the first 250km is dull - but the last 100km... will have you entering a mountainous route that offers views in every direction. The last 30km you will be driving a narrow mountain road that was carved out in the mountain tops.

Kaapschehoop is a small informal town with wooden houses, small handcraft shops and horses. The town consists of a few permanent residences and numerous guest houses offering bed and breakfast or self-catering accommodation for those looking to unwind. (Some of the houses have pumpkins on their roofs just to make the town a little quainter.)

The town also boasts a small romantic chapel for weddings (with breathtaking views of the mountain and valley thru the numerous large windows). You can book the chapel for weddings, baptisms, etc. Do take note that a Catholic priest is available to perform ceremonies and services. The chapel is right next to the reception hall that can seat up to 130 people. Catering can be done by the owners of the hall - and waiters can be supplied.

A whole entertainment section with dancing hall is also available. The dancing hall is closed off - it also has a small stage. The outside area includes a pub/ bar section that can be covered to keep the cold out. A large open air fireplace can be used to provide warmth, cook food and make coffee for those that are brave enough.

A hiking trail is available for the outdoor loving visitors. The trail is clearly marked and will take you up onto the mountain top that is covered with rocks in interesting formations. (The hoses may follow you on your hike - so don't be alarmed.)

The town has a few animals wandering the streets - so please drive slow!

Useful information to make your stay a little more pleasant:

  • Take hiking shoes.
  • Extra snacks and sweets (as the closest town is 30km).
  • A jersey or 2 (even in Summer).
  • Sunscreen and a hat!

Useful information on your way there:

  • Kaapchehoop is situated 350km from Johannesburg on the N4 (national toll route).
  • Toll fees are about R100.
  • Roadworks may occur, as the road is being upgraded.
