Abandoned Houses

empty houses gone to seed

empty kitchens with no one to feed

where once was laughter, spiders spin

forgotten dreams ... an off key song

no cat in the window... everyone's gone

where sheets once danced on a line

the tire swing replaced by poison vine

wildflowers where the roses grew

where is the family that loved and knew

where sunlight painted a bright design

floors once swept now warped with time

the slap of a screen door, the shout of a child

little secrets and presents piled

daffodils still bloom in spring

robins, wrens, and bluebirds sing

do ghosts knit sweaters or answer the phone

do ghosts light candles when they are alone

abandoned houses, forgotten lives

the house sits empty, nobody's home

Strange places empty homes. They make you think about who may have lived there etc.

How sad that these beautiful homes and the dreams of their owners are left to the elements of death. It would be wonderful if those homes could be refurbished and used for the homeless. Great article!

The poem was lovely...and I always feel sad when I see an abandoned home...all the joy that may have been there and why? is it alone now? Has anyone investigated any of these on here? some were very big.....Thanks :O) Hugs

ethel - they are strange and sad, and oddly romantic in a very sad way. Thanks for commenting.

Nancy, I had a friend who attempted to refurbish an abandoned house and it was not only difficult and expensive, but there were problems that popped up that made it almost impossible to repair. Some cities have offered abandoned homes for sale for $1.00. In the past this worked quite well in some areas. But you have to have the finances and wherewithall to do the work. Thank you for stopping by.

G-Ma, I ride past these empty houses in both rural and urban areas and just have to wonder. Some of them would cost a fortune to repair. Thanks for the hug, G-Ma, consider the hug returned, dear.

I am always sad when I see an empty fallen house and always comment to hubby about it...we went by so many just today coming home from a beautiful wedding reception.

Thanks, deneevana, I guess we all see them, but abandoned houses can clutch at the heartstrings, they seem so lonely. Thanks for commenting.

GiftedGrandma, you really have to wonder how come so many homes are just left to rot...thanks for stopping by.

Thank you, Brenda. I enjoyed creating it as well and hope to post new photos as I dig them out. I had some great pix of a huge abandoned house, but somehow lost them.

What a great poem. I use to think I knew how to write poetry until I got to college and began reading Shakespeare's sonnets and the poetry of Tennyson, Lord Baron, whitman and others. It was like getting doused with a bucket of ice water. What I was writing in my youth was really prose disguised as poetry. But that's when I began writing fiction! Great job on this poem!
