When looking at an Abeka teacher manual, you need to know what you are getting and whether this is what you need for teaching your children or not. Here are some facts to help you make an informed decision:

1. Teacher manuals tell you exactly what to say when. Do you like to have a script when teaching your children? Do you like to know exactly what you are supposed to do that day? If you are more of a free spirit and like to do your own thing, you might get frustrated having to follow a script and strict schedule.

Do you like having oral review each day and a guide that tells you how to teach the rules of the subject you are teaching?

2. Likes - Many parents like knowing exactly what they and their children are suppose to do each day. They think it helps them stay on track for the week. They like the colorful textbooks and traditional method of teaching using textbooks and workbooks. Parents can follow a script of knowing what they are supposed to say to their children to teach the material they are supposed to teach for that day.

3. Dislikes - With the Abeka teacher manual there is not much hands-on learning. There is basically direct instruction, textbook assignments and workbook pages to do. They also have a high burnout rate.

4. Options - Some parents don’t get the manuals for the early grades because they just follow along with the workbooks and textbooks. Others who are new to homeschooling like to know exactly what to say. Since there are no placement tests with Abeka and parents have to guess what grades their children need, sometimes they pick material that is too easy. If the material is too easy the parent can skip the text and just test the child. If the child passes a test, then they can move on to the next test until they find one they can’t pass. If the material is too difficult for the child, the parent can either slow down, do less of the material, or purchase the next grade down.
