Closet designs are integral parts of your interior design plans as a well integrated closet space can increase your level of comfort in your home. You can cover many areas of your home with individual closet designs and many companies will come out to your home, take measurements and discuss designs, styles and materials with you. They can show you how to take advantage of your space and maximize your storage area. Lighting will be an issue, especially with walk-in closets and proper ventilation is necessary in order to maintain your closet's cleanliness. I want to touch upon all of these subjects in this article so that if you are considering investing in new closets you will be able to get a definite grasp on your closet designs from the outset.

Configuring Your Closet Designs

Starting with space you need to get an idea of what you are working with, what can be changed and what your limitations are. Your closet may be small but it usually has unused room in it. That would be the space near the ceiling. This space can be incorporated into your closet design to increase utility and efficiency. Installing shelves all the way up the wall can be used to store out of season wear. Things that will be used most often should be well within reach. Organization is a key element that will shape your closet design ideas into realities. Compartmentalizing a smaller closet is an ideal way to create more space and reduce confusion. In some areas of the closet you may want to utilize bins and boxes. Clear bins make it easy to view their contents and you can easily implement this idea when you design a closet.

Lighting In Your Walk In Closet Designs

When you get into walk-in closet designs, lighting will become an important thing to consider as you want to be able to see everything in the closet clearly. Natural light isn't always a possibility and really, it's unlikely that you will have a sunlight or window in your walk-in closet unless you plan to convert an unused room in one. Even then your closet designer will tell you it is best to not have natural sunlight coming in because it can fade and damage your clothes. If you have the option of installing a sun light, this can be optimized for UV protection. Track lighting is the best way to address your lighting needs. Implementing this style of lighting in your walk-in closet design can be an economical way to reduce energy consumption and save yourself some money. Adding LED lights are a perfect way to reduce your carbon footprint as they are low energy bulbs and they are great for track lighting as they are directional and can point directly onto your shelves or drawers.

Track lighting will also enable you to spread light around evenly in your closet so you have full visibility of everything within. You should arrange your track lighting directly over your shelves or immediately in front of it overhead so that you don't end up blocking the light or cast shadows yourself. Another benefit from using LED lighting in your track lighting is that it doesn't produce heat so you won't have to worry about an accidental fire.

Properly ventilating your closet is important to reduce dust build up. When you start out on your bedroom closet design you may be able to incorporate your central air unit to help aerate your closet. Airflow will help keep mildew down. However if you can't do this you can always install a ceiling fan. This will provide enough circulation in the closet.

In the following video you will find many answers to your questions on closet organizer design. It is a consultant for California closets and she walks you through all the aspects and pitfalls most people come across in their closet designs. Enjoy.
