Persian cats have long been a popular breed among cat fanciers. Named for the land of their origin, Persian cats characteristically display gentle personalities. They are best recognized by their long, thick, fluffy hair.

Classically, Persian cats are thought of us as having white fur. But, Persian cats actually come in a variety of other colors, as well. The Cat Fanciers Association recognizes seven different color divisions. During competitions Persian cats are divided into the following groups: Solid colors; silver and gold; tabby; shaded and smoke; particolor; bicolor and Himalayan. Within each of these divisions there is a marvelous array of different shades and variations of hue.

White Persian cats often have eyes of an intense blue color. Although, many Persian cats have copper colored eyes. Sometimes white Persians will have one blue eye and one copper colored one. Silver Persian cats typically have blue-green eyes and golden Persian cats sometimes have green or hazel eyes.

Because Persian cats have such large eyes, they are subject to frequent tearing and subsequent infection. A gentle facial wash with lukewarm water applied with a cotton ball will help keep their eyes and faces clean and healthy.

Most breeds of cats can maintain their coats on their own, but Persian cats cannot. Their fur is long and thick, so it must be groomed daily for not only appearance, but the health of your cat. Brush your Persian cat daily with a special cat brush that has metal bristles. Removing loose hairs helps Persian cats to remain free of hairballs, which can become a problem for both you and your cat.

Bathe your Persian cat regularly. Usually, once per week is sufficient. Bathing works best if you begin when your Persian is just a kitten. It's also best if your Persian cat becomes accustomed to a regular bathing schedule.

Because Persian cats are very gentle they are relatively safe to have around children. They are also excellent companions for pet owners of somewhat limited physical abilities because they are not very demanding. They communicate with their gentle voices and their eyes. They are playful without being destructive and typically don't climb and jump a lot. They seem to love attention and are happy simply lounging around the house letting people admire their beauty.

Persian cats are among the easiest to keep when compared with other breeds. They must be fed, groomed and loved. Properly cared for, Persian cats can live as long as 20 years.
