About Sleep Disorders...

Most people who suffer from a sleep disorder do not even realize that they have a disorder.

While many things can cause sleeplessness, people need to realize that simply writing off sleepiness or troubles in sleeping is very unwise.

Everyone needs to know something about sleep disorders in order to recognize the symptoms.

There are many different kinds of sleep disorders, but the most common ones are Narcolepsy, Sleep Apnea, Insomnia, and Restless Legs Syndrome.

The key to knowing if you suffer from one of these is being able to recognize their symptoms and havea little information about sleep disorders in general.

The first of these disorders is sleep apnea. The common signs of sleep apnea in a sleeping person are excessive snoring, gasping and snorting, as well as a cessation and restarting of breathing. Sleep Apnea causes a person to feel unrested after a night's sleep and tired all day long.

Another form of sleep disorder is Insomnia. The typical characteristics of insomnia are an inability to "fall" asleep or stay asleep, waking up hours before the alarm and unable to go back to sleep, and an all-day feeling of sleepiness.

As is the case whenever a person talks to his or her physician about sleep disorders, it is wise to be as precise as possible when discussing possible symptoms.

Insomnia can often times be a symptom of something even more serious such as depression.

A third common form of sleep disorder is Narcolepsy. People who suffer from narcolepsy usually feel extremely sleepy during the daytime and often fall asleep for short periods throughout the day. It is not uncommon for people who suffer from this disorder to fall asleep standing, walking, or even driving.

The dangers that exist whenever there is a discussion about sleep disorders can be catastrophic. In the case of narcolepsy, this can quite obviously be a tremendous concern.

Finally, a discussion about sleep disorders wouldn't be complete without mentioning restless legs syndrome (RLS). This disorder usually manifests itself in the form of an unsettled restlessness of the lower legs and an achy feeling in the legs that can only be soothed by moving or kicking. RLS can cause sleeplessness as well as drowsiness throughout the daytime due to a lack of restful evening sleep.

If you are concerned that you may have a sleep disorder, start by asking yourself, "Am I tired and why."

If you ask yourself these questions every day and come up with the same answers, chances are you need to have a serious discussion with your health-care provider about sleep disorders.

Go ahead, answer the 7 questions and see for yourself how you too can regain peaceful sleep.
