A degree in "forensic science and criminal" in the College of Health Sciences, North (ISCS-N) offers a first cycle of training in a particular focus on forensic science, through fields of chemistry, biochemistry, biological, anatomical and morpho - physiological and mathematical-physical, complemented by Criminal Sciences, in part focused on specific areas of Social Sciences and Law.

The training provided will enable the students knowledge and skills appropriate to the resolution of issues especially bio-physico-chemical, linked to evidence in the field of forensic science. The growing need for professionals in this area, as a consequence of the increasing application of forensic science and crime, justifies the nature of this first cycle, since the area of knowledge has been individually and is said now, as specific and valid for you only. Indeed, while in Portugal the area of knowledge is especially represented by second round of study, the subject area is taught as a first cycle in several European countries for more than fifteen years. The emergence of graduates in forensic science and crime, as a result of new first cycle in this area of knowledge, will be a group of professionals with clear targets for action and social intervention, with large and robust capabilities that can only strengthen, dynamic and evolving capacity and the variability of criminal and forensic research, with a capacity of completion of legal value.


Acquired skills

The objectives of the general course of study for degree in forensic science and crime, provide the following key skills:

     a) understand the fundamental concepts, principles and theories of criminal and forensic science.
     b) in depth knowledge of the key areas of intervention of Forensic Science and Criminal and require strong scientific expertise, technical and ethical, recognized by the judiciary.
     c) know the current developments of forensic science and criminal for main areas of expertise.
     d) be able to consult appropriate literature, showing complete comprehension and critical of the content, context, objectives, quality of information and its interpretation and application.
     e) provide critical and analytical skills in the context of forensic science and crime, to recognize what factors should be researched, tested and evidence that can / should be evaluated.
     f) be able to employ methods of study in forensic and criminal investigation, recording and analysis of facts.
     g) be able to think independently, perform tasks and propose solutions to solve problems within forensic and criminal.
     d) demonstrate levels of knowledge, understanding and enough performance to ensure employability or allow access to subsequent courses of study in forensic science and criminal investigations or related areas.

Are specific objectives of studies Bachelor of Science in Forensic and Criminal, train graduates able to solve problems of technological and scientific nature related to forensic and criminal investigations, according to recognized and properly respectful of scientific principles, social and ethical, according to established by the judicial system.



Careers

The skills developed in the degree in "Criminal and Forensic Science" will be used for different functions of the specific professional area. Examples may be indicated:

     Recognized and valid * Collection of samples / trace to use as evidence.
     * Interpretation and processing of evidence and crime scenes and evidence.
     * Analysis of samples as evidence in private laboratories and the State (police / justice).
     * Experts in the presentation and validation of forensic evidence and criminal.


Graduates in the Forensic Science and Criminal can actively work in integrated teams of criminal investigation that required many employers, as examples:

     * Security Forces
     * Courts of Justice.
     * Private security companies.
     * Business of supervision and control of food and environmental area.
     * Ministry of Defense (Secret Service).
     * Foreigners and Borders Service.
     * Offices of Lawyers.
     * Institutions of Education and Research

is never too late to begin studies again!
