"Above the Fold" is a term commonly used by web designers and desktop publishers on the area of your website that is in view without having to either vertically or horizontally. This is the first part of your site that your visitors can see that's why many web designers considered it to be one of the most important parts of a website.
Also, the above the fold area gives you a chance to make a good first impression to your visitors especially the first time ones. Since human attention can be very hard to grab and takes you only 10 seconds to do it, you have to think of different creative ways on what to do or what to put on your above the fold area.
However, you have to take note also of the all the properties of the above the fold area to utilize to fully. For example its size only measures about 1000 pixels wide by 578 pixels high. This should the basis of what you should or can include. So for example, you have an important message that you want your readers to know, you have to limit and base it according to this size.
Here are other elements you can include on your site's "above the fold":
1. Site Description
Above the fold area is perfect to put your site's description like what your site is about or what are you offering that way, your first visitors can have an idea on what your site is all about. You can use a main
headline followed by a secondary headline so that visitors can understand further what your site is about.
2. Call to Action
It
is also great if you include a call to action on your above the fold area. Like for example, you want your visitors to sign up for your free newsletter or subscribe on your RSS feeds, you can put
the sign up box and the RSS button on this part, respectively, so visitors can easily see them making your chances of getting new sign ups and subscribers higher.
3. Site Navigation
Putting your site's navigation on this area of your website is helpful not only for your site but most especially to your first-time visitors. You are also giving your
visitors the full control on how they can further navigate your site.
4. Use titles that convey benefits
Using titles like "Special Offers", "Savings" and "Free" are great way of grabbing your visitor's attention. So by putting this words on your above the fold area, you are drawing your visitor's attention on it especially on your call to action.
