Abstract Paintings

Can someone tell me what the picture above is all about? Abstract paintings are visually appealing to art lovers and art connoiseurs but for the rest of us, they are just perplexing. Think about it! Sometimes, you have people who can stare at a particular artwork for hours, trying to figure out the meaning behind the designs and their inricacies but at the same time, you have people who can finish touring the whole art museum in less than an hour. I am definitely no expert when it comes to abstract paintings but I have a friend who develops a deep passion for them. Thus, in this hub, I will try my very best to crack the abstract paintings code.

Let me first define the history of abstract paintings. Abstract paintings, in essence, are a form of rebellion against conventional paintings that focus on realistic shapes and forms. Many artists contend that if you want to have a realistic piece of art, you might as well take a snapshot using your camera and that is not what art is all about. They believe that art is about conveying certain messages, emotion and desire and this can only be done with abstract paintings that do not put a lot of emphasis on shapes. Isn't it amazing that certain artwork with colors splattered across the picture can fetch a million dollars or more?

Now, I am going to talk about the analysis of abstract paintings. The first thing you can do is to look straight into the artwork and think of the meaning of the abstract paintings themselves. Let the artwork deliver its message to you. I know this sounds pretty difficult but trust me, it is not. The artwork is called an abstract painting for a reason: different people have different interpretation of the same piece of artwork. Thus, there is no right or wrong answer. All you need to do is to explore your emotions and try to figure out what the art is trying to tell you. To illustrate a case in point: I was looking at an abstract painting with a friend of mine. I told her that the piece of art looked like some guy from the men's magazine. I thought she was going to laugh but surprisingly, she told me that my answer could be correct.

The next thing you can do is try to appreciate the colors, line and form of abstract paintings. Colors are really effective at delivering emotion. Red would symbolize anger, green would mean envy, white would define purity while bright pink would mean love. Look for clues in the color scheme to try to figure out what the abstract painting is trying to say. Lines and forms also constitute a big part of abstract paintings. Look at the title of the painting and try to match it with the lines and forms present on the piece of abstract paintings, for example, a painting with the title two white doves might just have two lines splattered across a blue background. Look for cues like this one to figure out what the meaning behind abstract paintings.

Now that you know how to judge abstract paintings, you can always use this talent to impress your friends.

Respectfully, I must say that if you have to explain to someone HOW to appreciate an "abstract" painting, then that person is not ready to look at such paintings.

In my world, "abstract painting" simply means shapes, colors, and arrangements of lines that create resonance in people who look at them.
