Achieving Success
49There are very few people in the world who do not desire success in their life
while on the other hand, there are only a few who actually manage to achieve
success. Do you believe you have been successful and if not what do you think
has been the reason? Lack of time, money, motivation? You may be surprised to
hear that all these could have been managed if you had set your goals carefully.
Let us see how we can achieve success, one small step at a time.
In order
to achieve success, we need to define success. Each one of us has a different
definition of what success means to us. You should therefore understand what
success means to you. When will you think you have achieved success - when you
have reached a managerial position in your company, when you have made a certain
amount of money, when you have bought a new car or a new house? Or does success
for you mean the freedom to play golf on weekends or the chance to spend more
quality time with your family? Once you define what success is for you on
different fronts, you have more or less defined your goals and all that it takes
to be successful is realizing these goals.
You may have different goals
on the personal front and professional front, health front and the financial
front. Let us first begin by stating the long-term goals on different fronts.
Take a journal and write down very clearly what your long-term goals are. Now to
achieve each goal, we need to break them up into smaller and smaller sub-goals,
till you are left with a list of practical steps that you need to take. This
could be as simple as making a telephone call or contacting someone for a
brochure.
Once you have a list of small tasks ready, include one task
every day in a calendar. This could be a calendar on the wall or an online
calendar. Make time to finish one task from the list. You can then set up
tentative deadlines for achieving these goals and have measurable milestones.
Completing one task everyday is not only easy to do, you will have the
satisfaction of finishing something and that will keep you motivated. When you
reach a milestone, take some time out and reward yourself appropriately to keep
you going. Only by celebrating these small achievements and by being inspired by
them can we keep moving forward. Slowly but surely, you will see that you are
getting closer and closer to your goal till one day you can enjoy accomplishing
your final goal and claim true success!
However ambitious your final goal
is, you should realize that it can be accomplished only by dividing them into
smaller and smaller steps. Only by taking these small steps can you make your
journey towards the final goal a successful one. And when we achieve those
successes along the way, it's important to celebrate them and to be inspired by
them, so that we are motivated to achieve the ultimate goals in our lives as
well.
