GERD in Infants

Acid Reflux in babies is a little more common than you would think.  In fact, it is the "GER" without the "D" because typically acid reflux symptoms will go away on their own within a year to a year and a half.  These babies are often called happy spitters because of their frequency to spit up their food for no reason at all.  This type of reflux actually happens to over 50% of all babies under 6 months.

This said, there are some cases in which gastroesophagul reflux in babies can be more serious.  When this happens, a medical doctor should evaluate and treat your baby.

Acid Reflux Treatments in Babies

If your baby is exhibiting no problems outward and appears to be growing at a natural rate and is healthy, then your doctor will likely simply use your assessment of the situation based on feeding history combined with the symtoms and a short physical examination. However, in some cases, more tests are needed.

Esophagul pH monitoring will help to measure the acidity in the baby's throat. Typically, this is done by putting a tube down into the throat and leaving in overnight.

Upper endoscopy- In this test, a small camera is inserted into your baby's esophagus to see if there is any stricture or inflammation that could be causing the reflux.

Lab Tests- Finally, you can expect some lab tests. This is the typical blood and urine test and is done primarily to make sure to make sure that the reflux is not something more serious and won't effect weight gain.

**YOU SHOULD NEVER TRY TO TREAT INFANT ACID REFLUX ON YOUR OWN WITH OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATION...ALWAYS DO SO UNDER THE CARE AND SUPERVISION OF YOUR PEDIATRICIAN**

Symptoms of Reflux in Infants

While in most cases, reflux isn't that serious, there are some symptoms that you should be aware of. If your child has any of the these symptoms, they may have GER....

  • Frequent "Spitting up" or vomiting
  • Irratible disposition when feeding
  • Your Infant arches his or her back when feeding
  • Your baby frequently hiccups or coughs
  • Wet Burps in which the reflux is too little to classify as "spitting up" but enough to concern you.
  • Your baby refuses to eat or only eats in very small amounts.
  • Bad Breath
  • Poor sleeping habits and frequent wakings

These could be symptoms of reflux for your infant. Then again, it could be something else as well. As a parent, any of these symptoms could be GER or it could just be the typical infant development that happens. The most important thing to ask is is your baby growing at a decent pace that is comparable with other babies in the same age range? If not, then you should definitely investigate to rule out the possibility of Infant reflux.

Do you have acid reflux?  Are you looking for acid reflux natural remedies?  The bad news is that you can use them for your infant.  The good news is that you can try them out on yourself though.  Most of these GERD remedies will help you in the very least cope better with your acid indigestion.

Treating Acid Reflux in Babies

You should always consult a doctor before you try to treat anything for your infant. Your infant's health and well being depend on it and only a professional can give your verifiable answers to your situation. In some cases, a doctor will prescribe a treatment like taking antacids like tums or mylanta or an acid suppresser.

In most cases, if the infant is growing and healthy, your doctor will likely do nothing as infant reflux usually disappears on its own.  Treatment will largely depend on the age and severity of the symptoms.
