Although acne is most common among adolescents and young adults, it can occur at any age. Acne most commonly appears in the oil-producing area of the body, ncluding the face, back and shoulders. It ranges in severity from mild to severe, and while it is not dangerous to one's health, it causes a great deal of embarrassment and social anxiety for those afflicted by it.

One of the causes of acne is a common bacteria which is found on the skin of most people of all ages, Propionibacterium acnes, which can cause the skin infection acne vulgaris. When pores become blocked, the bacteria flourishes, causing an infection and then an inflammatory reaction inside the blocked pore.

Washing one's face regularly is helpful, but scrubbing at acne does not necessarily help alleviate the symptoms; if it did, there would be no need for acne medication! Everyone could just get rid of it by scrubbing. The problem is that the bacteria is located beneath the surface of the skin, and scrubbing the surface of the skin will not get rid of this bacteria.

Abnormal flaking of skin cells inside of hair follicles can also cause acne. The skin cells plug up the follicle and cause an infection and inflammation.

Among the treatments for acne are: Antibiotics, including Tetracycline, Erythromycin, Doxycycline, and Clindamycin. Some of these have side effects, and some individuals are allergic to certain antibiotics. It is important to discuss possible side effects with your doctor before taking these antibiotics.

Accutane, a form of Vitamin A, can be very effective against acne, but also causes severe birth defects and dry mouth. Again, it is very important to discuss with your doctor the possible side effects of taking this prescription medication.

Topical medications, such as Retin A or Benzoyl Peroxide, or Salicyclic acid. A dermatologist can discuss the best options with you, depending on the type and severity of your acne, and also depending on whether you have any allergies or are concerned about any particular side effects of particular types of acne medication. (For instance, a woman who is considering getting pregnant would not want to take medication that causes birth defects.)
