Acne In Pregnancy
64Acne is a condition on the skin occuring due to the oil glands' oil overproduction of oils. Acne may be triggered or made worse
during pregnancy. If a woman already has acne than she may observe more
or less of them so it is not quite right to make a prediction of how
pregnancy will affect the adult acne.Increasing hormone levels make the body start to break out, or if you
already break out, to break out even worse. Hormones make your oil
glands to produce more oil than normal and this causes acne.
Although acne may be observed at any time during or after pregnancy; it
normally develops during the first three months (first trimester). If
you are lucky enough, acne seems to clear up as the pregnancy
progresses. Due to increased levels of estrogen in pregnancy, your skin
may look even clearer than it has ever been. But that is not always the
case. It may get even worse as the pregnancy progresses due to even
higher levels of estrogen.
And what about acne after the pregnancy? Well, again it is not quite
sure to make a prediction. Your skin may return to normal a couple of
months after you give birth, or acne may continue to develop on your
skin due to sudden decrease of etrogen levels in the body. This is
because evey woman has different types of skin.
Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent acne before, during or after
pregnancy. However; there are some things for you to take well care of
your skin, to decrease the severity of acne.
First of all, you should see your dermatologist before taking any
treatments, even herbal ones. Professional support grants your safe
caring of your skin. Psychologically affected negatively by the acne,
some women start taking some treatments or applying self-treatments
like creams etc. but this only puts your skin health at risk!
- Do not over-wash your skin, which may stimulate more oil.
- Gently gently wash your skin with a mild soap or cleanser twice a day.
- Keep away from washcloth, towels or any skin-irritating factor since irritation makes the problem worse. Wash your face gently with your hands, instead.
- Just dry your skin rather than rubbing it.
- Use oil-free moisturizers.
- Use disposable, soft sponges.
- Always prefer oil-free, mild cleansers.
- Don't squeeze, rub, or pop your pimples – it'll aggravate the problem and could lead to scarring. And it will only cause you to spread bacteria.
- Don't use oil based products if you wear makeup, just use water-based ones and that are labeled "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic,". That means they won't clog your pores and cause breakouts. Be sure to wash your makeup off thoroughly before going to bed, too.
- Consult your doctor before using any medicated gel or lotion. Don't forget that pregnancy makes the skin even more intensive and vulnerable. Some products help clear up acne, but some of the ingredients aren't safe for pregnant women or haven't been well studied in pregnancy. If your acne is severe, you may need to see a dermatologist.
- It's important to avoid the oral prescription drug Accutane (isotretinoin). It can cause serious birth defects. And also tetracycline, doxycycline, and minocycline; which can cause teeth and bone abnormalities in the fetus.
- It's considered safe to use topical prescription antibiotic creams containing erythromycin or clindamycin, but only considered because it may not be the same case for every woman. Always seek a dermathologist before applying or taking any treatments or medicines.
And the last and most important of all, if you experience severe or persistent problems with acne, consult with your doctor/dermathologist.
