What a difference a face makes! It does for those with ache. Teens are trying to learn how to get rid of acne, which may be causing them to be anger, embarrassment, have low self-esteem and depressed, Having to deal with taunting at school from classmates can be devastating. Whether you are looking for acne treatments yourself or others, hopefully this hub will help.

I made fun of home remedies for acne in my last hub, but I decided to take another look, it seemed only fair. I was still skeptical and still found several methods ridicules. Let me share with you some of the information I found about acne treatments and you decide for yourself. With the recession we are going through and the high cost of medications and procedures it would really be great if some of these actually work. If you do try any, please share your opinion by leaving a comment in the COMMENT box.

Signs of Acne -  really oily skin, whiteheads some of which may be inflamed, blackheads, large visible pores especially around the nose area and those little bumps that appear under the skin.

Acne tends to appear mostly on the face, back, chest and shoulders, the oil glands in these parts of the body are where the acne infection starts.

Much talk has been done on the causes of acne and here are a few -

  • Genetics - Acne can be passed down, so if a parent had it you would be susceptible.
  • Hormones - There is no time in a person’s life when the body is going through hormonal changes. Acne can flare up for the adolescent and also for pregnant women who’s experiencing hormonal changes as well. In my opinion I see this as the main culprit.
  • Stress - Stress doesn’t cause acne, but it may very well aggravate the condition.
  • Occupations: Especially if you work in fast food and are dealing with frying of potatoes, etc., you may experience more outbreaks than normal. Be sure to clean your skin as soon as it is feasible after getting done work.
  • Foods are no longer considered to be a cause of acne.

Tips on skin care -The most important treatment of acne is skin care, to both prevent and treat the problem.

  • Try not to touch your face a lot. This is a hard one to follow.

Don’t heavily scrub the face, this only increases the oil secretions.

Change your pillow case three times a week; the constant rubbing of expelled skin and oil while sleeping will contribute to the spreading and severity of the acne. Say nothing of all the stuff you might have put on your face (toothpaste, etc.)

Use a clean towel to wash your face and pad it dry, don't rub. My step-daughter’s dermatologist recommended she use only plain white paper towels to dry her face.

Kept your hair clean. When you have dirty or oily hair you will get a lot of acne around the ears and forehead
  • Don't Stress over your Acne; easy enough to say for anyone that never has dealt with acne.

Natural Acne Treatments these are only a few -

  • This sounds like the beginning of a recipe for salad dressing. Take vinegar and salt, mix the two together, apply to the pimples and leave it for 10 to 20 minutes, remove with lukewarm water.
  • Use Lavender oil to apply directly on the acne area, you will smell nice will be a plus on this one.

This might have been where the idea of Cucumber Mask products began. Make a paste with cucumber and use it as a facial mask. Leave on for 30 minutes daily. This remedy is used for the prevention of acne.

Take garlic capsules, they boost the immune system and kill the bacteria found in acne; at least it isn’t rubbing a garlic clove on your pimples like some have suggested.
  • Now I ask you, doesn’t this sound ridiculous? Put toothpaste on the pimples will help reduce its size. Apply a little before going to bed and hopefully you will see a change in the morning.
  • This next one sounds like the beginning of a recipe for salad dressing. Take vinegar and salt, mix the two together, apply to the pimples and leave it for 10 to 20 minutes, remove with lukewarm water.
  • Make a paste with cucumber and use it as a facial mask. Leave on for 30 minutes daily. This remedy is used for the prevention of acne. This might have been where the idea of Cucumber Mask products began.

  • For really bad acne, put tea tree oil on the acne affected skin. I’m sure you will have to go to the health food store for this one, unless you have some way back in the refrigerator that you forgot you had. This is a natural antibiotic. It is believed to be as effective as benzol peroxide, but without side effects. It reduces redness, itchiness and stinging.
  • To help get rid of the body of toxins, eat foods high in fiber, drink lots of water, eat four red delicious apples a day for five days straight. Apples absorb toxins from the body. Eat low fat yogurt, a healthy bacteria contained in this type of yogurt will help.
  • Eat the three “S”, shellfish, soybeans, sunflower seeds, and nuts, these are all rich in zinc which is antibacterial.
  • For some eating anything with sugar can produce what is called "skin diabetes" which leads to acne.
  • Eat foods rich in vitamin A, which is important for healthy skin. These foods include dark colored fruits & vegetables (carrots, winter squash, sweet potato) and lean protein and foods rich in zinc (nuts & legumes).
  • Mix equal parts of fresh grape and pineapple juice and apply it to the acne affected area three times daily. These fruits are rich in alpha-hydrox acids (AHA) which exfoliate the skin and reduce clogging of oil glands.
  • You need to balance the PH in the body. Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 10 tablespoons of mineral water apply the mixture to the acne with cotton balls.
  • Buy a natural soap for acne available in any health store. These soaps contain sulfur which is essential for acne skin. Use the soap no more than twice a day, over use can increase the secretion of sebum from the oil glands.
  • Eat a medium grated radish with every meal.

  • Oatmeal masks are super easy to make, and inexpensive. Take a handful of uncooked oats put it in a blender for 30 seconds or so, until you have a nice powder, mix with warm water until you get a creamy consistency. Add a pinch of dried chamomile or lavender and you have an oatmeal mask that rivals store bought products. Let set on the face for ten minutes and rinse off. Your skin will feel soothed and cleansed.
  • Drink 2 cups of rosemary tea.
  • Drink 3 glasses of water with squeezed lemon and honey.
  • Mix 1 tablespoon of dried or fresh yeast with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice; apply on face, wait until it gets hard (try not to move), peel or wash with warm water.
  • Clean your skin: soak a cotton ball in either lemon juice or apple cider vinegar and apply on face.
  • Mix 2-3 tea bags to some basil and cook in boiling water for 10-20 minutes. Then apply on the acne with a cotton ball.
  • Saturate lettuce leaves in water, use water to rinse face and acne.
  • Grind bay leaves and blanch in water, Cool and apply on the acne.
  • Boil water in a pan, add some apple cider vinegar. Cool, put a towel on your head and bend over the pan.
  • Clean your face every morning with cotton ball soaked with vinegar; might sting; try on a small part first.

That's it for now, see you next time.
