Acne is well known as the bane of a teenager's existence. But whether it's stress or genetics, some of us still get breakouts long past adolescence, and even into middle age! Here are some basic, yet effective acne-fighting recipes. No outlandish ingredients, no chemicals, no infomercials needed! Incorporate these easy-to-make recipes into your regular facials, and see the results!

Depending on your skin, you may find that some work better than others for your individual needs, so try them all at least once. Rotate the most effective remedies to ensure you do not over-expose your skin to certain ingredients, which may be too strong for daily use.

Masks and Packs

For use 1-2 times a week.

Baking Soda-Bran Pack

  1. Mix 1/4 cup bran or oatmeal with 2 tsp baking soda.
  2. Add enough water to make a thick paste.
  3. Apply liberally all over face, avoiding eyes.
  4. Leave on 15-20 minutes.
  5. Rinse gently with warm water.

Garlic Mask

  1. Peel and crush eight cloves of fresh garlic.
  2. Apply to face, avoiding eye area.
  3. Leave on 10-15 minutes.
  4. Wash off with a warm cloth.

Tomato-Honey Mask

  1. Mix 1/2 tsp camphor lotion, 1/2 tsp tomato juice, and 1/2 tsp honey.
  2. Apply paste to face, avoiding eye area.
  3. Leave on 15 minutes.
  4. Wash with luke-warm water, then rinse with cold.

Milk-Lime Peel

  1. Boil 1/4 cup whole milk.
  2. Mix in juice of one fresh lime, and 1 tsp glycerin.
  3. Apply to face, avoiding eye area.
  4. When dry, peel or wash off with warm water.

Toners and Tonics

Apply after mask for best results.

Basil Tonic

  1. Boil 1 cup water.
  2. Steep 2-3 tsp basil leaves for 15 minutes.
  3. Strain, let cool.
  4. Apply to face and neck with cotton ball or pad.

Vinger-Honey Toner

  1. Mix 3 Tbsp honey into 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar.
  2. Stir until completely dissolved.
  3. Store in refrigerator 3 days, stirring daily.
  4. Apply to face and neck with cotton ball or pad.

Peppermint Face Tea

  1. Boil 1 cup water.
  2. Steep peppermint tea bag for 10 minutes.
  3. Remove tea bag and let cool.
  4. Apply to face and neck with cotton ball or pad.

Aloe-Thyme Tonic

  1. Stir 2 tsp thyme into 1 cup aloe vera juice.
  2. Store in airtight container.
  3. Let sit in refrigerator overnight.
  4. Shake mixture, strain thyme out, leaving liquid.
  5. Apply to face and neck with cotton ball or pad.

Spot Treatments

For those last-minute emergencies, try these on-the-spot remedies. (No pun intended!)

  • Apply a paste of ground radish seeds and distilled water to dry up blackheads.
  • Put a dab of toothpaste on pimples for overnight relief.
  • For breakouts, mix 1 Tbsp corn flour with 1 egg white and apply to area.

I'm sure your parents have some vinegar in the house, Maddy, so try the Honey-Vinegar toner. If not, see my response to your comment on the facial cleanser recipes...

Alli:

Toothpaste dehydrates the pimple and absorbs the oil. Just make sure not to use a whitening toothpaste, as that has hydrogen peroxide in it and can irritate the skin.

I need somethingf to get rid of the HUGE pores on my face! Any ideas! PS. I'm black so the pores are very noticable. Ohh... one more thing, any ideas of natural exfoliators or toners! Thanxs

Try the recipes from the links above, under "More Spa-at-Home Treatments!" Try the Peach Mask to tighten up those pores, and the Oatmeal Scrub for exfoliation.

Shuchi:

I'd start with the baking soda/bran pack, followed by the basil toner or peppermint face tea. Try a paste of ground up radish seeds and distilled water on those blackheads overnight. Make sure you are not picking at your face, that you wash it twice daily, and that you use an oil-free moisturizer!

Good luck,

Maddie

kshjrh  says:

On the spot treatments part, where it says:

"For breakouts, mix 1 Tbsp corn flour with 1 egg white and apply to area."

Did you mean to say CORNMEAL, or is it really corn flour you use? Have never noticed corn flour in stores I shop in, but then I really wasn't looking for it.

i have this zit on my forhead and well it's pretty big, i was wondring if u have any other home remidies that work for just putting on one zit other than the ones up above,

p.s do u have any tips to get rid of redness from the zits?

morgan  says:

to get rid of redness, try putting visine on the zits individually.it does the same thing that it does for red eyes, basically, so it makes them less red.

I tried the oatmeal and baking soda mask.. I have one question is it suppose to tingle while it's on my face?

Maddie Ruud profile image

Maddie Ruud  says:

evie14:

Many of these masks and toners will tingle. Just make sure you do not leave them on too long. You may want to test a little patch of skin with the mixture before you apply it all over your face. If at any point the sensation becomes uncomfortable, wash the mask off with cold water.

My wife has had acne treatments which have pre-disposed her to acne even at 36 years old. We tried many things, but one thing that has worked for her and my son is the Far Infrared Hothouse. There is further documentation on this at chinow.com. are you familiar with the Far Infrared treatments? Great posts :)

The oat meal and baking soda really irritated my face. I had to wash it off after 5 mins :( my face was fine afterwards however. I guess I need to keep looking until I find my ideal mask!

toothpaste works because of the alcohol in it... alcohol is too strond and may cause dryness... ive personally tried it and found that it works...not over night...but if you apply it at night for a week there are good results ;]

I Just found this site and i am excited to start trying all of the masks and toners; i just washed off the baking soda-oatmeal pack and am waiting for the basil tonic to cool! I do have a few questions though that if anyone could answer for me:

1. Do these recipes work for back and chest ance?

2. How long can i keep the basil tonic and at what temp do i store it at?

3**I do have some scars and was wondering if there was any natural recipe out there that i could use to fade them a little**

4. Are there certain masks and toners i should use together or can i mix and match?

Thank you so much for this site, i love all the natural ingredients!

I just used the oatmeal/baking soda one, I hope it works! Can I use it daily?

Also, for anyone who says they don't have these things in their house, that's doubtful. These are the simplest ingredients that you use in almost every day cooking. If you really don't have them, they cost a few bucks at the grocery store.

The best thing to use is Clearasil stayclear Oil-Free Dail face wash the sensitive formula. I used this and the next day my face was completly clearer No joke!

Best thing out there and it costs like maybe three dollars. Cheap and Effective!!

For the baking soda-bran pack, Does the oatmeal/ bran need to be cooked?

queen cleopatra  says:

many years before, i remember that i used cornstarch because we ran out of oatmeal and bran. there was no soda, too, so i mixed the powder with small amount of water. it worked--it minimized the oiliness of my skin. for a simple facial mask, i just slap my face with small amount of pure honey all over my face. after leaving the mask on for an hour, i wash it off with cool water. it was refreshing. hmm, i think i'll have to find time for my face this week. thanks for this hub. it made me remember the past. :)

I want to try the oatmeal/baking soda thing but I ran out of baking soda... is baking powder bad to use? could i use it as a substitute?

Lindsey  says:

I tried making the baking soda-bran mask, but I think I goofed somewhere along the way. I used oats which I ground up, but the paste I made wouldn't stick to my skin. First, it was too thick, and ultimately, it became too watery and thin -- there was no in-between that worked! What I could get to adhere to my skin would eventually fall off in little globs. What'd I do wrong? Most people seem to be getting good results, so I'd like to give it a go. Thanks. :)

the toothpaste thing really does work. the thing is you just have to do it in the pimple area... if you spread it around like a mask it tends to dry out the rest of the skin and make you look red all over

will any of these moisterize my skin back to health?

This is a nice way to deal with ane. Other easy ways to keep off acnes is by keeping your skin dry all the time since this prevents moisture which is a key attribute to acne and pimples. Make sure to wear sunscreen all the time if your regimen takes you outdoors and try to avoid nylon and and lycra garments if you are prone to acne since they may strap heat and moisture aganist your body leading to acne
