Acne Treatments :: Azelex vs. Differin
67Acne Treatment: Azelex Vs Differin
Acne is caused by the effects of certain hormones on the pilosebaceous unit of the skin, consisting of a hair follicle, sebaceous gland, and a hair. When the follicle becomes obstructed, a bacterium, Propionibacterium acnes acts on it destroying the lining of the follicle leading to an overgrowth of the skin. This process allows follicular material to enter the inner layers of the skin, causing an inflammatory response. This results in the eruption of pimples, whiteheads or blackheads, which on healing produces scars (keratinization).
Azelex, made from 20% azelaic acid cream, a substance found occurring naturally in whole grains is used to treat mild to moderate acne. It is chemically different from all other medications that are currently available for the treatment of acne. It works by reducing the microbial activity in the follicles and normalizing keratinization, the two major causes of acne. Azelex which is specifically made for women can be used under makeup, moisturizers, sunscreens, or even other topical medications. Majority of patients start seeing improvement in their acne within about four weeks of use. Other than producing occasional bleaching of the skin, Azelex is not known to cause any major side effects. There have been reports from darker skinned people that the application of Azelex causes lightening of the skin. However, the effect of Azelaic acid in people with dark complexion has not been well studied. It is important to consult the doctor in case of any irritation, itching or redness of skin.
Differin or 0.1% adapalene is also an effective medication for acne. It is available either in a gel or a crème form. Differin® Gel is a clear odorless gel that is free of oil and alcohol. The gel which is applied directly to the face or affected area, is thought to work deep inside the pores and normalize the accumulation of skin cells that plug the pores, keeping them clear. Differin® Cream is meant for patients with sensitive skin. During the first few weeks of treatment there are chances of development of itching, dryness, redness, burning or peeling of skin. While using Differin® Gel, exposure to sunlight should be minimized. When exposure cannot be avoided, sunscreen and protective clothing over treated areas is recommended. As in the case of any other acne medication, overexposure to extreme wind or cold and use of irritating skin care products may lead to aggravation.

Azelex can be very helpful in acne treatment because it is made of twenty percent azelaic acid cream that is found naturally in whole grains that is used to treat mild to moderate acne. On the other hand, there are many ways of acne treatments and they are easily available in the market. However, the effective and affordable way would be laser acne treatment.
