Acoustic Guitar Lessons - Techniques and Tips
59
Are you bored of all the generic acoustic guitar lessons that just teach acoustic guitar chords and boring guitar strumming patterns? If you are, you should not get frustrated. There are many advanced techniques that can bring a fresh new perspective to playing the acoustic guitar.
One of these techniques is called "finger style". This is basically a style of playing which incorporates utilizing your fingers and hands in unconventional methods. A couple of the different techniques that are commonly used when playing finger style include tapping, alternative tunings, reversed positioning, and percussive playing.
All of these can be great techniques, however the most popular and probably the most useful is tapping. Tapping is a technique that involves mobilizing your strumming hand to use it to play licks that would usually be reserved for your fingering hand.

Before jumping right into advanced finger style lessons its best to get a few basic techniques down first. Also it's important to note that finger style is not a simplistic style thus guitarists will commonly experience aches and pains when first learning this style.
This is due to the fact that in order to use these techniques you will have to contort your hands into positions that are quite foreign to conventional playing methods. Most players will experience the aforementioned symptoms until they get use to the difference in positioning, don't let them discourage you, it's all part of the learning process when trying to learn finger style acoustic guitar lessons, and applying this technique over acoustic guitar chords, or finger style guitar strumming patterns.
Tapping
In order to start tapping your going to have to get used to using your strumming hand in ways that you have never before. The way that this technique is achieved is by moving your strumming hand up the neck and literally tapping on the string to play the desired note.
How this works is the sheer force of you tapping will allow the note to sound. At first you may want to just start tapping out a simple song or a bass line that you already know. Once you get used to the motion of tapping with your strumming hand you can practice to try and get your taps as loud as possible.
Alternate Tunings
Aside from tapping, alternative tunings are also essential to being a great finger style guitarist. The way that this technique is utilized is by tuning your guitar to an open tuning. An open tuning is when the strings are tuned to play any specific chord when strummed open. This allows a guitarist to play a chord without using his fingering hand and in some cases strum a chord with his finger hand. When this is achieved you will be able to play a chord while using your fingering hand for other techniques such as percussive playing. Then you can incorporate finger style acoustic guitar chords into your playing style. From there you can develop a basis for guitar strumming techniques. Alternative tunings is the number one thing you can get from acoustic guitar lessons and take your playing to the next level.
