71- Google Adwords Consulting
Confessions of an adwords consultant: I believe in honesty and transparency, so here's my confession to you...
Before I Became An Adwords Consultant, I went through hell!
Google can be a money making machine… or a giant-money-eating-monster! (with big eyes and teeth)
I know it now, but I discovered it the hard way! (After loosing thousands of dollars...). The thing is you won't realize right away that you’re losing the game. It’s only later when you look back that you'll notice the hole in your wallet that’s been slowly getting bigger and bigger and BIGGER! Yes, that's what happened to me and many others.
Advertising on Google is something that I've been doing for a while. I've tested a lot of things, some of which have been successful, others disastrous! But I sure learnt a lot from it.
I’m a Certified Adwords Individual, you can see my credentials on my Adwords Consulting website.
One Thing That Has Been Working Well For Me
How To Get 10/10 Quality Scores 7 times out of 10
Some acheive 10/10 quaility scores by chance, for others it's a complete myth they've only heard of in fairy tales and bed time stories. Let me show you how to make it a constant reality in your advertising.
The method I'm about to show will get your keywords 10/10 quality scores most of the time!... Not always... but most of the time!
However, *wink, wink* if you use it and find that it works and you don't back here to give me some luv, I will bless your posterieur with my righteous right foot. :D
There are 3 steps to my method and I will explain each briefly:
- Make sure nothing on your landing page will upstet Google.
- Start with an Ad you know already works.
- Apply some *KICK-ASS* Kung-Fu keyword bidding strategy. (this is where you must NOT be shy, but must be careful)
Make sure nothing on your landing page will upset Google...
Your landing page is simple the page on your website where visitors will land. There are many little and bigger things that make a good landing page but since we're only interested in having a GREAT quality score at first, we'll stick to the basics.
- You landing page should have the keyword you'll be using in the headline. More specifically, in <h1> tags (not familliar with html jargon... look it up, or post a question... i'll be glad to answer)
- Your landing page should have links to your business info pages, which are: an "about us" page, a "contact us" page and a "privacy policy" page.
Those are the basics. You may have heard speculations about google wanting a lot of content on your site, that you should have a blog, that you should have at least 10 pages and links to other websites, etc, etc.... I've tested it all! The truth is this is all you need to start off with a 7/10 quality score.
If you slap up and adwords campaign and your keywords have less than 7/10 quality score at the begining, chances are you screwed up one of those steps on your landing page.
(Note: I didn't even talk about duplicate content... don't worry about it, it's not really an issue and anybody who tells you otherwise hasn't really tested much with Adwords)
- Google Cash Detective
See what your competition is doing right and do it better.
Start with an Ad you already know works...
I'm about to reaveal my secret weapon and I'm not really sure if I should. But if I got to give you the 10/10 quality score then I got to give this away too.
See, most people write ads trying to guess what people will respond to. Some have great writing skills and are lucky here and there. The truth is every market is very diffrent an something that works well in one doesn't work in another. Some people respond to big promises, some are turned off by it... and usually things that work are very counter-intuitive.
So how do you get an ad that you already know works? You "borrow" one from your competitors!
Not any competitor... but a competitor that has been advertising on your keyword for a long long time.
And how do you that? It could be nice if you could send him an email and just ask what's been working well... but I'm not sure he'll be ready to hand his business keys to you just for your cute smile.
You put on a sky mask and go on operation "Super Spy Detective". It's actually simple. There are many tools on the net that let you spy on your competitors ad. What you want is one that shows you for how many days a competitors ad has been showing up for a particular keyword. The only one that I use is called Google Cash Detective (this is not a free tool, it costs $1 to try for 7 days then there's a monthly subscription... there are many others on the web, this one works great for me).
This is what it looks like:
I'll put a better picture when i have time. But if you can manage to see, I'm looking at the advertisers for the keyword "christian books" and what I can see is that the first ad has shown for 210 days out of 220 (see the 3rd colums from the right). That tells me that that ad is a winner... and that's the one I'll borrow.
It also tells you alot about the language of the market and how to write a competitve one to beat it so no one else can touch you! (unless they've gor the same tricks as you do).
In case you don't see the advantage of this, let me explain... NO GUESS WORK!
Kung-Fu keyword Biding strategy...
So you've got an ad that you are 90% sure to get you a high Click-Through-Rate... you are already setting yourself apart from anybody who'd be begining in your market.
Now what you need is to get on top of the hill, plant your flag and clim OWNERSHIP of the market! It's yours now.
The way you do is going to sound scary for the shy ones... (you're not one of those, are you?)... you start off with very high bids!
I'm taking about bids of $2.00 to $3.00. Of you're likely not going to pay that price when someone clicks (unless your market is really competitive). You'll only pay the price to stay above your closest competitor.
Here's a great video that explains it all:
I hope you didn't stop reading because this last step is critical...
*DO NOT KEEP YOUR BIDS AT $2.00*
If you've done all the steps correctly, you should start receiving clicks very soon at an extremely hign CTR (click-through-rate)... in the range of 10%, 20% and even sometimes %50 (yes I've seen that happen)
Soon as you see your first couple of clicks comming in, you start reducing your MaxCPC (maximum cost-per-click)... but not anyhow!
You reduce to what Google has been charging you. For example, if your bid is $2.00 and google charges $1.20 for your first click, you reduce your bid to $1.20. Then google will charge you less, like $.79 then you reduce it to $0.79 and so on until you are confortable with your bids.
Doing that, you might wake up the following day and find that google has given you a 10/10 quality score... you'll be nodding and smiling! (come back here and rave about it)
That's it! Try it and let me know your results...

Thanks a lot for the comment AdwordsFan. The keyword bidding strategy is essential to getting a high CTR right off the bat which translates into a great quality score then cheaper traffic. But it is also important to know your market, understand what your searchers are looking for and give them ads they want to click on. Writing great ads is an art form on itself and requires you to go deep into the psychology of your customer. Personally, i like to start with copying the competition then building on what's already working for them to have better results.
Hi AC, good stuff although you have a "pop" at me for shamelessly promoting on a hubpage and you sell a "cute smile". All I will say is people who live in glass houses...
...you know the rest.
I am your first hubpage fan :>)

Ok. This is great is great info. I particularly like the keyword bidding strategy, I've shying away from such methods but I guess it is what works. Putting a $5 cap at your daily budget at the beginning would be my suggestion.
I really appreciate this blog, you've earned my participation and willingness to share it ;-)
Although I'm not interested in any adwords consulting, I'm looking forward in more tips on using adwords!
