Adding Photos on HubPages

Photos drive traffic to you hubs through image searches. Label them relevant and clear.

First Things First

Photos help to make a hub on HubPages unique, aesthetically pleasing, entertaining, and informing all at the same time. One of the wonderful things about HubPages is its ease of use. When it comes to adding and editing photos in your articles, you'll find that it's super easy.

Starting a new project can be overwhelming. You need all the tools you can get your hands on at your disposal. Being able to manipulate your photos, you'll find, is beneficial and key. HubPages is there for you, and just in case you need visuals, I'm here for you as a proud member of HubPages (though please note that I am not commissioned by the HubPages staff to offer you this information).

This hub is all things photographs and pictures on HubPages. This article is meant to give you a good solid grip on the ins and outs of HubPages photo capsules, options, settings, cans, and cannots.

The first thing you'll want to look at where photos are concerned is your hub's "Assemble your capsules -- 'settings'" section. See the following snapshot from my computer:

LINK TO SLIDESHOW

THIS IS WHAT YOUR READERS WILL SEE AND BE ABLE TO CLICK ON TO GET A FULL SLIDESHOW OF ALL THE PHOTOS ON YOUR PAGE. WHAT I'VE WRITTEN HERE I WROTE INTO THE CAPTION. THIS IS WHAT A CAPTION WILL LOOK LIKE IF YOU WRITE IN CAPS LOCK.

You can choose to check the square to link your hub photos to a slide-show. There will be a link on your first photo and only your first photo that opens a new page where readers can navigate through your photos, pause, go back, go forward, repeat. Captions will also be viewed with each photo if you have placed any with them. There will be two links that take your readers back to your hub. See the next photo for details.

This is an option you can change at any time during the life of your hub. All you have to do is go back in and check or uncheck the box and then save.

Editing mode offers you capsules... Use them!

On the right hand side of your screen while in editing mode, you'll find an area that presents you with the ability to add capsules to your hubs.  Photos are a must! So click click click.  Not too many.  All relavant.  Your style.  Your way.  Here's  how.

PHOTO OPTION CALLING TO YOU VIA "ADD MORE CAPSULES"

Clicking on photo will present you with a capsule that looks like the photo below when clicking into it.

Note: When you add capsules they will be immediately deposited at the bottom of your page. They are moveable. Green arow up, down, right, full. You can even delete capsules you no longer want or need. You can also keep a capslule invisible to the public until you are done editing if you are working on a change while your hub is published. Just click on the Don't display this capsule box to check it. Uncheck it to make it viewable.

Another way to get photo capsules into your hubs:

As Candie V (a great friend of mine and fellow hubber) mentions in the comments section, there is a handy dandy nifty module that can be quite helpful while in editing mode. You'll notice while in editing mode that as you scroll down, you get a drop down module bar across the top of your page. It will look like the following photo:

top drop down bar for inserting capsules on hubpages withouth having to scroll up

Just click on the capsule of your choice, in this case photo, and a capsule will appear at the bottom of your page. No need to scroll up to do so, but you will need to scroll to the bottom of your hub to edit or re-position, just as you would if you added a capsule from the square sidebar module. This can be especially useful if you have a hub full of capsules and are towards the end of writing your hub.

Either way you chose to insert your photo capsules, editing them will always be the same.

In the photo below, you will see blue circles. These are the places you get to play with. We'll go through them one by one.

PHOTO EDITING MODE

You can add a Caple Subtitle as I have for these.  They show up as any text capsule title would, with a bold, Heading 2 font.  You do not have to use these unless you feel it is appropriate and it makes sense to do so due to asthetics, subject, presentation, and or purpose.  This area is changable for the life of your hub on HubPages.

You can also add a Caption any time you want.  These are deletable (by highlight and backspace/ highlight and delete/ or highlight and cut) and changable during the life of your hub on HubPages. Note: Captions stand out better if you write in all caps.  So if what you are writing needs to be seen as part of your hubs' content, this would be my suggestion.

ADD PHOTOS FROM YOUR COMPUTER

To add a photo from your computer, click on the dot by "My Computer".  Follow the instructions.  Be sure you click on "load images".  If you click on save before you have done so, just click on edit again, click on my computer again, and it will be there.  It will NOT still be there after you have left editing mode for your entire hub.

ADD PHOTOS FROM THE WEB

To add a photo from the web, meaning you have a Url link for a photo you are wanting to place in to your hub, click on the cirle by "The Web" to fill it and follow instructions.

IMAGE SIZE

(Note: at this time, you can't place photos on the left. Ads will not appear there either dispite what a preview may show, and at this time you are not able to add a click through link within photos in your hubs.)

  • You CAN however adjust the size of your photos by selecting "full width, half width, or quarter width" from the "image size" tab by your downloaded photo in the photo editing box.
  • You can play around with this as much or as often as you like throughout the life of your hub on HubPages.
  • If your photo is out of focus, often times adjusting the Image size to a lower size will fix this issue.

DISPLAY SETTINGS - STYLE

  • You can choose whether or not you want a frame (border) to appear around your photo by choosing "No Border" or "With Border" under Display Settings in the "style" section.
  • You can choose a slideshow view here as well. If you have more than one photo, and aesthetically speaking you do not wish to have all displayed, this is one option for you.
  • Another option would be to choose the thumbnail view, allowing you readers to see all of the photos with the ability to enlarge one at a time. I personally love this option.
  • As with ALL photos, you MUST have the right to use them. Please be sure you give appropriate credit to your photos via caption or links.

The following four photo capsules show examples of the four different style possibilities.

Photo with no border and full view image

As you can see, and as Maven101 noted (you don't want to miss out on his hubs by the way) the borders offered in the HubPages photo capsules have a gentle effect that does not detract from the photo. Nor does it attempt to present itself as a photoshop type application. It can, however offer a bit of neutral variety. Classic subtlety, one may say. If you wish your photo's to have a more embellished border, be sure that they have been "pre-embellished" if you will, before downloading into the photo capsule editor.

While you can specify modify individual photos in each capsule as to which size you prefer each to be, reguardless of how many photos you have chosen to place in each capsule, each capsule can only offer one type of style. You cannot choose to have some of the photos in a particular capsule to have borders while choosing others not to. If you want a variety of borders, you will need to begin a new capsule for that purpose.

Also note that, as mentioned by two of my favorite hubbers, Brian S and Tom Cornett (in the comments section), the words you have used in the filename of the photo you are wishing to use, as well as the words you chose to use in the caption are searchable by search engines, so again, relevant keywords apply in your photos as they do with any other part of your hub. Image searches can be a large part of your traffic, so please do keep this in mind.

Photos set as a slideshow, full-sized image version -- go ahead, it's okay to play with the buttons: play, back, forward -- click away and check it out.

Photos thumbnails no re-direct to full size on another page. Just click on a thumbnail to view it.

Click thumbnail to view full-size

Note where the caption will be. Most of the time you will notice that this is based on where the largest photo’s caption is. For this reason, having a link to all photos, which opens on a new page, makes a lot of sense when your captions are important.

***

If you are wanting your photos to align right, you may have a bit of a time getting them to fit in exactly where you want them to. You may have to place some "dummy" text capsules (thanks form the reminder of this helpful tip, dohn121) or another photo capsule in full alignment mode to get your photo to stick where you want it to. Note that your photo capsule will veer right only when there is something below it that it can conform to. Start simple if this seems confusing until you get the hang of things, and use your Preview button at the top of your hub while in editing mode so that you can get a feel for what is going on with your capsules -- they don't always appear in editing mode as they will once your hub is published and the Preview option allows you to see exactly what is going on. Preview mode can be refreshed as often as you need to. This way you don't have to keep saving your hub to see what it will look like (though please be advised that for a variety of reasons it is always a good idea to save your work in both your capsules and your overall hub).

***

Hope this has been helpful. Enjoy your photo capsules and put them to work for you!

I certainly hope that other newbies (aside fro myself :D ) will benefit from this helpful and comprehensive hub on adding photos. I remember in the beginning, I had no idea on how to collapse a photo, using the --> button and using a dummy text capsule along one side first (maybe you should add this info!) Great job in Frieda!

The photos on your hubs are one of your strengths - I don't know how you find such cool ones, like the folded money camera on top & the glistening wet flower in another hub with a lovely poem on it that I can't seem to find right now =)

Thanks dohn121. I'd gotten distracted by arguing children and got lost mid thought and that was exactly what I had been thingin about. Couldn't for the life of me remember what it was! Thank you so very much!

Hey Marco. Thanks. I've become quite the sneaky searcher, lol. I have a hard time settling. It takes me longer to find the pictures than to write sometimes. Yes, I took those down, my poems and stories. I'm hoping to find a home for them soon. Thought it was best to unpublish them. If they become homeless soon I'll see about getting them back on. So sorry about that. I know there has been some disappointment. Ah well.

And dohn, do you like never sleep? You're much like me in that regard, lol.

Hello there. Great hub thank you for sharing. I would like to know if there is a limit to the amount of photos you can place on a hubpage.

Frieda Babbley profile image

Frieda Babbley  says:

Not that I'm aware of. I have 42 on this one. If anyone knows otherwise please let us know, but I'm pretty sure you can go all out (though I'm sure you don't want like a thousand photos in one hub, lol). If you have too much or too little of something, you'll get a message on your hub when you save your hub. Great question TrudyVan.

Hi Frieda, what a brilliant subject for a Hub, I am a bit green I didn't think of it. :-)

It's probably worth mentioning that search engines actually find keywords in the image captions and file names as well and there are occasions when your hub can be included in the search results based on the file name for your image or what you have put in the caption. Titles are also very important places for keywords and adding photos is a great way to generate extra titles for positioning primary keywords without it looking clumsy.

Just a thought for those interested in SEO.

So that's how to make a thumbnail! Thanks Frieda, I always wondered how you done that in your hubs! I did not realize that option was even there!

Fantastic "how to" OGS2!!! Have you seen the little thing that pops up when you touch the upper corner on a capsule you're working on, that lets you add a photo etc to that capsule immediately? I've just seen it and it's slick! I've never used the 'thumbnail' feature, and I don't think I've seen anyone add one. I'm going to try it out!

Great hub, this will help newbies figure out how to make these hubs great!

Thank you so much Brian for clarifying that. I had begun to write in detail about the keyword in image caption and file names, I was not 100% possitive that that was the case, so I cut it short. Thank you! It's in. =D

Aidy, you're welcome! It took me FOREVER to figure that out, lol.

Hi Quill! Thank you for taking your time out to pop in. I do hope it will clarify some things. (Now to keep up with any changes hubpages makes on photo capsules, lol. I'll have to keep up with this. There's always something new and exciting.

Thanks for mentioning that Mavin101. It is a subtle difference, you are not going blind, =D. The reason is that the background of the photo I chose is grey. I've clarified that a bit and offered a non-grey background to preview as well. Excellent observation. Thank you much for bringing this up.

Hey there Ag. If they repeat the slideshow link (the one that takes them off of your article and onto a special page via the first photo, those are each considered slideshow views.

I also believe, and please correct me if I am wrong someone, that when you do an image search you can be routed to the slideshow view without going to the article.

Also, if people are looking up stuff on HubPages, they can get a slideshow photo as a resulting search query. This takes them to your slideshow. They can opt to go further and view your hub if they like. There are ads on that page, and that is, (I believe) still counted towards you. Slideshow pages become an extention of your hub.

Hope this info helps, and if anyone knows otherwise, please let me know.

One major thing we have learned is the importance of Image Search for attracting traffic.

This Hub will be useful to many people.

Frieda Babbley profile image

Frieda Babbley  says:

Hi tonymac. How goes? Happy New Year. Great question. I haven't come across that issue in a very long time. I'm trying to remember what the issue was. Things I would ask you check are: 1) make sure the photos are in gif or jpeg only otherwise they won't work at all. 2) Make sure the photos are not too big, that takes up a lot of space and time to download. I sometimes will make a copy of a photo that is large on another application like paint and scale it down to 250 for example. Some photos come in rather large and you don't know it unless it's pulled up in a certain format and then you're like, woah! and 3) if the page you're on isn't the only page up, close the others and any extraneous applications that may be running.

Hope that helps. Happy New Year!

Hi 2patricias. I know. The sad thing is it took me up to the writing of this hub to figure it out myself. I checked around and there was nothing like this hub available. I'm like no way! I had to fill the gap and fast. lol. Yeah, image search is a major traffic pull-in for me.
