Adopt an Animal

I work at the West Suburban Humane Society in Downers Grove, IL and I work with the dogs in the kennel. When I first started this volunteer job I wasn't sure what to expect in these dogs, would they be mean?
However, I have come to find that some of these dogs are the sweetest animals I've ever met. I befriended a pit bull terrier, Brad Pit, and as excited as I was when he got adopted, I was so sad that he was leaving me. I had been taught that pit bulls were nasty dogs and to be very cautious with them but that was silly stuff that my mom had told me so I didn't get hurt. Some pit bulls are trained to be attack dogs and that is where my mom got the stereotype.
Another dog that touched my life was a newfoundland mix named Tiny. He was quite the opposite of tiny, he was huge. I love big dogs and Tiny just was so sweet he tried to make me happy however he could. He would heel and walk on a leash perfectly, a common misconception is that most shelter dogs aren't trained at all.
These dogs need homes as life in a shelter is stressful. They need forever families that will love and take care of them unconditionally.

what a great hub you have, people dont understand that these pets deserve to be taken care of just as much as any other. This is especially good for those people who dont have that much money to spend on a pet.
Thank you for this hub.
I'm proud to announce that all dogs featured in this hub have now found homes. I believe Okie and The Lone Ranger were adopted on the same day!
Adopting is really a great choice, we have some amazing dogs that I would take home with me but I can't because I'm in college. It gets hard because you get attached to some of the dogs but in the end, there's no better feeling than imagining the family they're going to live with and the love they're going to get.
I tried fostering a dog once. I ended up keeping her. Needless to say, I cannot foster anymore or I will have a houseful! I get too attached.
I know, when Brad Pitt left I was so sad but at the same time so happy for him. I mean, it sucks that I'm never going to see him again but I'm glad someone adopted him... it can be hard for pit bulls to be adopted.
Pit Bulls are sweeties! Their breed is misunderstood by the public at large.
I agree... they've been bred to be aggressive but without training to be mean then they won't be mean. Brad taught me that. He was my first favorite dog at the shelter. It was the hardest to see him leave. It was even harder when people talked about how horrible he was because he was a pit bull =(

I can see that you are a wonderful person to have working at a shelter - you give love and goodness knows these poor creatures crave it. Today I sat at my church - nobody was there - and a stray tom cat came slinking by. I called him over for an ear rub and although he has two abcesses festering on his side and must be in a great deal of pain, he started up a loud purring and rolled in the leaves at my feet...poor guy.
