Advantage Imidacloprid Flea Treatment Pet Poisoning and Death
78Two Cats treated One Dies, One Very Sick
Last week my cat Muffin died, and his brother Snowball is fighting for his life.
After extensive research, trips and calls to Veteranarians the conclusion is
that Advantage being sold at Pet Supermarket over the counter is to blame.
They have been selling it there for years, and according to Bayer, the makers of
Advantage under 9lbs. flea solution when asked doesn't know how they're getting it.
PetSmart is allowed to sell it and Petco, but not PetSupermarket.
What concerns me even more is the damage that the main Ingredient is causing to not only our pets, but our Honey Bee population.
Imidacloprid ( a generic pesticide) is in many things. It can be very toxic, even when used as directed.
If you suspect your pet, cats and dogs have any of the following symptoms
Call a REPUTABLE veteranarian and they will tell you to wash it off immediately,
others may tell you it's something else because they carry this product.
Loss of Appetite, drooling, Eyes leaking, loss of balance or staggering, fatigue or
lethargic behavior, abnormal behavior, head shaking, scratching.
When they stop eating they will die without hydration. If they are older pets
less chance for survival. Try to get them to eat or drink water, but you must wash
this stuff off them because when they bathe themselves after eating they will ingest it. And make no mistake, it will kill them.
This product is made in Germany by Bayer, the same Ingredient has been noted to
be the topic of discussion regarding the Honeybees distruction in France and Germany and even NewYork is trying to ban it.
I have used the Advantage before and had no problem with it, but not this time.
I will never use it again. The Bayer company does not care about a bad batch, or a
Petstore that has it on the shelf and isn't supposed to, nor do they care about the research that speaks to the adverse affects of IMIDACLOPRID.

First, I am sorry to hear about your pets.
One thing to check is if the product was actually a counterfeit product and make sure you report the incident.
Most of the toxicity problems have come from over the counter products and counterfeit flea products that are sold by unauthorized agents.
You can find more information on http://www.fleacontrolsecrets.com/fleatreatment/ in the two part article on counterfeit flea products.
There is also an update on the 10 year study on imidacloprid and a link to the site to report incidents in the resource area.
I hope you will report this incident. The EPA is supposed to announce their findings next month so every report is important.
